View Full Version : They must be there somewhere??....
The Seage family in both the 1901 census and the 1911
I have tried many name variations but they are proving elusive - at least on ancestry 1901 - and the 1911 on FMP
Sabina (Bina) Seage born Q3 1891
Clement Edwin (Ted ) Seage born Q4 1892
William (Will) Seage born 1885/6 - not sure of this one's correct date
Amy Seage born Q1 1895
Sophie Elsie (known as Elsie) Seage born Q2 1899
There was apparently a sister Lily too but I haven't been able to find her birth registered.
The first few children were born Bethnal Green and the others were registered in Edmonton as they had moved to Tottenham by the time Amy arrived.
The name is pronounced with a hard 'g' - as in gate
Your help to track them down would be much appreciated. I don't know the names of their parents at this stage.
Thankyou
its going to be hard! all known by different names with an odd surname- ripe for mistranscription
looks like they stayed in the area though
Marriages Mar 1915
Seage Sabina Married Lovatt Henry J
Edmonton 3a 807
------------------------------
nope, failed dismally sorry
can you try & explain how it is pronounced again?
Sea- age? ( the ocean /how old you are)
Sea- j ? ( like siege, hold up)
Sea-g ? ( sea-ger)
I wondered if this was Lily?
Births Sep 1888
SEAGE Alice Lilian Bethnal Green 1c 162
I looked at all the Alices living in Bethnal Green District in 1891 b 1888/9 but nothing jumped out.
Tried all the Lil* entries as well. Nothing.
If you get desperate you could get Sabina's birth cert for the address.
Forgot to say, I couldn't see a marriage or a death for Alice L or Alice Lil* Seage. :(
Ah-Ha!!!!!!!
I think I've found them in 1901 listed as Smith!!!
166 Seaford Road, Tottenham, Middlesex
John Smith head m 46 plasterer b b Exeter Devon
Alice Smith wife m 43 b Bethnal Green
William Smith son unm 14 Builder's Office Clerk b Bethnal Green
Lillian Smith dau 12 b Bethnal Green
Sabina Smith dau 9 b Bethnal Green
Edwin Smih son 8 b Bethnal Green
Amy Smith dau 6 b Tottenham
Elsie Smith dau 1 b Tottenham
All the names fit (William is John William on FreeBMD) and the Seage name seems to be more common in Devon.
No luck yet with 1891 or with a marriage between a John Seage and an Alice X.
If I search the 'correct' spelling, there doesn't seem to be a John Seage of the right age on any census!! lol Maybe he got fed up with spelling his name?
Deaths of John (can't see Alice's death):
Deaths Dec 1921
Seage John S 67 Edmonton 3a 564
(wonder what the S was for?)
lol Thought it might be.....
Births Sep 1854
Seage John Smith Exeter 5b 82
They are Smith in 1911 as well, in Edmonton, but my battery only has two mins left so can't type it! Bye!!
*tuts* I had to go and plug the cable in to say, in that two min window I saw:
Marriages Dec 1880
Abbott Frances Elizabeth Bethnal Green 1c 637
BENNETT Charles Bethnal Green 1c 637
SAGE John Smith Bethnal Green 1c 637 <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
West Elizabeth Alice Bethnal Green 1c 637 <<<<<<<<<<<
I can see his Devon accent getting in the way in Bethnal Green!
SO Alice wasn't her first name either!
Name: Elizabeth A Seage
Death Registration Month/Year: 1940 Q1
Age at death (estimated): 82
Registration district: Edmonton
Inferred County: Middlesex
Volume: 3a
Page: 1620
Merry, thankyou so much for all that information.
Smith - I can't believe it!!!!!
I'm going to have a look at the entries for myself, right now, however did you find them?
I am most grateful, thankyou again
Doh! I saw this right at the very start, but hadn't picked up on the youngest child on your list! (was concentrating on Sabina at that point!)
Name: Sophia Elsie Seage
Record Type: Baptism
Date: 12 Jul 1899
Father's Name: John Smith Seage
Mother's Name: Elizabeth Alice Seage
Parish: St John the Divine, Stamford Hill
Borough: Haringey
County: Middlesex
however did you find them?
Looked at Sabinas aged 9/10 living in Edmonton district in 1901, immediately after I had taken in that the next child was Clement Edwin. Glanced at the Smith family on the index and noticed they had an Edwin and then saw Lily and Ada as well. Fully expected the handwriting to be bad, rather than them actually being listed as Smith!
Thanks again Merry
It looks as though John Smith Seage decided to use the middle name as his surname - which I must say is easier than Seage. Not great for future family historians though..lol
Was that last entry from FMP? I have been considering a sub, and it does seem to give a lot of useful information
If you mean the baptism for Sophia Elsie, no, it was from Ancestry.
I have given up with 1881 and 1891.
Do you need to go backwards with this family? In 1861 there's a child listed as John Smith b Exeter aged 6. He is a boarder in the home of William and Ann Seage, both aged 58. On the following census Wm and Ann are together with noone else and I can't find John.
*doh!* I saw those blinky Smiths too!
Thankyou Merry, no at this stage we have enough to work on, so won't go back further until we have sorted all the information out - and inwardly digested it all.
I am very grateful for your contribution, it has really helped, I don't think I would ever have found them on my own with the Smith twist!......................eeek!!
