After the death of her first husband at least four of Kate's children from that marriage were in orphanages and another was later in the care of her brother James Cooley. It was finding this connection with James in 1901 (at the house in Torrington Mews Kate was in in 1881) that makes me pretty certain I have the right parents - although I don't have a birth certificate or baptism for Kate herself.
