Okay that makes sense just googled and Auchencairn is in Castle Douglas, Dumfries.

Public road! Poor woman.

Oh yes,I'm sure you realised already, but it's place of birth, not of baptism.

Poor woman. Reminds me of that one OC told us about ages ago - a girl and her "bastard child" dead in a field.

She was my great great grandmother :)

I don't think she was actually on the road I think basically thats where they parked their tent or caravan or whatever they lived in when they travelled but it wasn't a proper address and thats the closest John and Mary could give the registrar I think.

I think it was their lifestyle they moved about a lot, they may be travellers, her husband's job seems to suggest that.

That was her fifth child Thomas and she had eight as far as I can work out, well eight who survived to 1881 anyway.

My 4 x great grandmother gave birth in an orchestra pit of a penny gaffe/music hall right after they'd kicked the audience out. That always struck me as fairly iundignified

The place she gave birth or the fact they kicked the audience out? ;)
