Okay that makes sense just googled and Auchencairn is in Castle Douglas, Dumfries.
Public road! Poor woman.

Poor woman. Reminds me of that one OC told us about ages ago - a girl and her "bastard child" dead in a field.

She was my great great grandmother :)
I don't think she was actually on the road I think basically thats where they parked their tent or caravan or whatever they lived in when they travelled but it wasn't a proper address and thats the closest John and Mary could give the registrar I think.
I think it was their lifestyle they moved about a lot, they may be travellers, her husband's job seems to suggest that.
That was her fifth child Thomas and she had eight as far as I can work out, well eight who survived to 1881 anyway.

My 4 x great grandmother gave birth in an orchestra pit of a penny gaffe/music hall right after they'd kicked the audience out. That always struck me as fairly iundignified
