A name to conjure with. He married my three times great aunt Sarah Goadby in Leicester in 1871 and proceeded to have, according to the 1911 census, 11 children, of which only four survived.

Working with the indexes on the GRO site and Ancestry, I am starting to pull this together, but annoyingly, I can only find ten children and three confirmed survivors. The trees on Ancestry are frankly not helping.

All events are in Leicester unless otherwise stated.

I have:

SQ 1871 William SURVIVOR

SQ 1873 Arthur (died SQ 1873)

DQ 1875 Ada Ann - married 1904 either James or Smith - SURVIVOR

JQ 1878 Alfred (Died JQ 1879)

JQ 1881 Walter aka Alfred II (died DQ 1881)

MQ 1883 Henry aka Joseph Henry (died SQ 1886)

DQ 1884 Catherine (died DQ 1884)

JQ 1889 Alonzo Andrew (maybe - he was born in Barrow on Soar, but the MMN is right) died JQ 1889 also in Barrow on Soar

MQ 1891 Winifred - married Cyril O'Malley and died in Berkshire in 1965 SURVIVOR

DQ 1896 Cyril (died 15 September 1916 on the Somme) SURVIVOR

There are gaps in the list between1875 and 1878, 1878 and 1881, 1884 and 1889 and 1891 and 1896, but I haven't been able to find anything to fill them.

Would anyone else like to have a go?

I've had a look, but with no luck.

The Barrow on Soar registration district includes part of Leicester:

No baptisms for the family on FMP, so I'm now looking at burials at Welford Road Cemetery.

I've found Alonzo sr and Sarah buried together in one plot, and 7 Heathcote children buried together in another:

ARTHUR d. 1873 aged 6 WKS
ERNEST d. 1877 aged 2 MTHS
ALFRED d. 1879 aged 11 MTHS
ALFRED d. 1881 aged 8 MTHS
CATHERINE d. 1884 aged 3 WKS
HENRY d. 1886 aged 3
ALONZO d. 1889 aged 3 MTHS

Oh, well done, Mary. So Alfred 2 = Walter, and Ernest's birth is on the GRO site as Heathcole with MMN Gradby which is why he didn't come up on my searches. Birth Jan-Mar 1877 Leicester.

So that gives us the burials of Alfred b. 1878 and Henry, plus two other children: Ernest (1877-1877) and a second Alfred (1881-1881).

Oh yes, I missed that Alfred 2 appears to be Walter.

Deaths Mar 1877
HEATHCOTE Ernest / 0 / Leicester 7a 144

Deaths Jun 1879
Heathcote Alfred / 0 / Leicester 7a 156

Deaths Sep 1881
HEATHCOTE Alfred Lorenzo / 0 / Leicester 7a 165

Alfred Lorenzo seems to match this birth, so not Alonzo and Sarah's child, presumably, although the name's intriguing:

This is presumably Henry's death:

Here's William in 1901 with wife Emma, son and "sister" Louisa (actually his sister-in-law):

It's definitely him, because his occupation is the same as in 1891, and their marriage is on FMP, showing his father as Alonzo.

Brilliant! Thanks, I'll pick the bones out of that later.

Alfred Lorenzo ought to be one of mine, but sadly he is not. He was a miner from Bagworth who later moved to Rotherham and who died on 23 April 1915, like so many others, in France.

A quick look on Ancestry suggests that Alonzo was not an unpopular name between 1840 and 1860, although as yet I have no idea why.
