Having looked for him on the 1851 and 1861 census without any luck, are you sure his name wasn't William Cooper?

I've found Peter Cooper b 1817 in Whitehaven in 1851 where William is showing as aged 1 and born Heaton Durham (which I can't find!)

I'm not sure which is the right birth reg for Wm as I'm not sure where Heaton is, but his older brother George (7 in 1851) was born in Chester-le-Street, so this should be him:

Births Sep 1843

COOPER George Chester le Street 24 40
Cooper George Chester le Strt. 24 41

There are two transcriptions for the same entry. I think the page number is 41 not 40, having looked at the GRO index page. Hopefully this cert should give you William's mother.

1841 census

William's mum may well be Frances:

Peter Cooper 25 Coal Miner Born in County? No
Frances Cooper 25 No
Sarah 10 No
John 1 No
Sarah 2 No

at Newbottle, Houghton-Le-Spring, Co Durham

I should think this is Frances' death reg:

Name: Frances Cooper
Year of Registration: 1851
Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
District: Auckland
County: Durham
Volume: 24
Page: 8

Peter and the children were living in Auckland district at census time.

Maybe Frances' death was childbirth related?

There's these two registrations:

Births Mar 1851
Cooper Thomas Auckland 24 13

Deaths Mar 1851
COOPER Thomas Auckland 24 8

and this baptism:

THOMAS COOPER

Christening: 25 FEB 1851 Auckland Saint Andrew, Durham, England

I've given up with 1871 as finding single men in their 20s is always tricky if they are not with their parents and by 1861 Peter seems to be dec'd.

I forgot to post 1851, so here it is:

Blue Row, Bishop Auckland, Durham

Peter Cooper head wid 34 coalminer, Cumberland, Whitehaven
Sarah Cooper dau 12 housekeeper b Northumberland, Gosford
John Cooper son 10 coal miner b Northumberland, Halliwell
George Cooper son 7 scholar b Durham, Chester-le-Street
Embla Cooper dau 5 scholar b Durham Kelloe (Embla seems to be a contraction of Isabella!)
William Cooper son 1 b Durham, Heaton

and 1861:

West Auckland, Durham

James Wheatley head m 24 pitman b Durham, West Auckland
Sarah Wheatley wife m 23 b Northumberland (can't read place)
Frances Ann Wheatley dau 1 b Durham St Helens (named for Sarah's mother?)
George Cowper bro-in-law unm 18 pitman b Northumberland Portobello (?)
Isabella Cowper sis-in-law unm 17 house serv b Durham, Kelloe
William Cowper bro-in-law unm 2 (should be 12?!) b Durham Helton

and here's the marriage to prove Sarah's name was Cooper and not Cowper!!

Marriages Mar 1858

COOPER Sarah Ann Auckland 10a 126
MEDLAM Elizabeth Auckland 10a 126
Richardson Anthony Auckland 10a 126
WHEATLEY James Wilkinson Auckland 10a 126

I can't see the Wheatleys in 1871 :(

William's birthplace of Heaton & Helton is most likely to be Hetton which was a small area near Kelloe.

DCC has an online BMD index (not complete) but I can't get it to load at the moment.

There's 2 baptisms of Cooper children with parents Peter & Frances Cooper on Durhamrecordsonline, John (1841) & Isabella (1846).

Merry, I am mortified but YES you were of help. You see I sent off for those certificates ages ago, but by the time that they arrived I was deeply involved in doing my husband's tree. I filed the certs away, and promptly forgot about them.........well, not promptly but his lordship's tree took ages and by the time that I had gone as far as I reasonable could with it I went back to a totally different line and Frances was forgotten.

It was not until your reply on here that a bell rang, and I found the certs.

Please accept my apology, and remember that this is par for the course for me! I don't mean to be annoying honestly, it just happens without effort.
