I have been looking at the 2 great grandfather thread and thought I would see if I could see how many of Thomas Horne's descendents I could trace. I have the magnificently named Eustace Royston Baum Pike son of Henrietta Horne who is showing up as a captain in the Australian army. I found a photo on the Australian war graves site but no death on CWGC and also a note to say he was discharged in 1916 but I wonder if anyone can find any more about hime. He was born about 1884 in Loughborough and I have him on the census there until 1901.

Eustace and his wife Lucy stayed in Queensland after the WW1. You can search the Qld BDMS index - Eustace died in 1949.

THe Australian Electoral Rolls show a person called Royston Joseph Baum Pike living at the same address in 1949 as well as Lucy Ethel Pike. In 1937 they lived at "Royston" River Terrace, Griffith, East Brisbane - also there at that time was Eric Royston John Pike and Lucy Ethel Pike.

You can search the Qld indexes online -https://www.bdm.qld.gov.au/IndexSearch/querySubmit.m?ReportName=BirthSearch
and the Australian Electoral Rolls to 1954 if you have an ancestry sub.

Eric Royston Baum Pike served in WW2 in the RAN - his record gives his birthplace as Winnipeg, Canada and his next of kin as Adeline !

Wow, nearly everything you need to know about Eustace - why he was in Canada and DOB, wife's maiden name, and only 2 sons.

His wife was Lucy Ethel; can't see a marriage in England or Queensland, and can't find him on a passenger list, but according to Who's Who he was in Canada from 1907-1911, so he probably married in Canada and travelled from Canada to Australia.

They don't appear to be on the 1911 Canadian census, so they presumably travelled to Oz just before it was taken.

In case you're interested, Roger Arnold Gregory Pike, son of Joseph Baum and Henrietta, was buried at Loughborough Cemetery on 16/11/1886, aged 7 months.

The index I have only goes up to 1891, so I haven't found burials for his parents.

thanks very much folks. This new challenge is certainly rekindling my interest in family history. I did not have Roger at all as he missed the census. According to the who's who entry Eustace married Lucy Webb in 1909 so that would have been in Canada. My great grandfather was the eldest son so he spent his whole life in Moreton in Marsh running the family business while his siblings were empire building. Eustace's parents are on the 1901 census.

There are 4 photos of Eustace here, and 17 articles if you search for "Captain E R B Pike":

Sorry, I was wrong, he's there, but mistranscribed as Eston.

He's living in Winnipeg, occupation railway engineer, with wife Lucy, born Australia, son Erick, aged 7 months, born Manitoba, and unmarried sister-in-law May (?) Webb, 25, born Australia.

You'll find the births of Lucy Ethel and Florence May Webb, and two more siblings, on the Queensland BDM site linked to above.

I wonder what the girls were doing in Canada?

Lucy Ethel and Royston Joseph at The Moorings, 118 Virginia Ave Hawthorne (homne duties and civil servant) (if you do a google maps search and go to street view, you can see it, in behind no 80 Uhlman st!!)

Ooooooh very ritzy area now..

Camp Hill wasn't quite so up market in 1954, but a ordinary house there (around Perth St) is over the million dollars now.

Di...........do you know the area??? I could get you photos if you like.

I just wish I had enough money to do my family history research personally. I fancy a world tour. I remember when I was a girl my great aunt showed me some wonderful railway share certificates for Canadian railways which she had inherited and were then practically worthless. I wonder if Eustace was the source.

Thanks again to everyone for their hard work. I have found out a lot more than I was expecting. If only all my relatives had who's who entries. I have just looked at a will from which my mum received a small legacy and it gives Henrietta Pike's descendents as Royston Joseph Baum PIke and John Baum Pike and Geoffrey Royston Pike. I had no idea they were in Australia. For fans of heir hunters the rresearch was done by title research who charged £10,700.

I see the millitary records give a contact address as Dr. Pike Vulture Street South Brisbane if that means anything to you Marquette. I have been reading about the Gallipoli campaign. I see my world tour will have to include Egypt and Turkey. If only.
