There are no army records for him that I can find.

I have his life in New Zealand and a stint in Australia, but where did he come from??
He did marry here in 1921 and divorced in 1938, and is buried with his former wife who died in 1940.

There is an Edward Chard of about the right age - b c1895 either Kent or Plymouth in 1901 and 1911, on neither is he with his family, but is a boarder in the same household

I cannot find a corresponding birth for this boy.

February 1912 a Ted Chard stableman, sailed London to Fremantle Australia, no age given. Trove has a number of hits for Ted Chard, he advertisd for a position on arrival in Australia saying he was experienced with show jumpers and hunters, and was a race horse trainer in Western Australia from at least 1926 up until the 1940s so I dont think this is our Edward.

Family Search has the passenger lists for him going from NZ to Australia in 1931 and back in 1939, and on the 1939 has his place of birth as England.

My guess is that he is the boarder boy and because of that, probably illegitimate. Can anyone find him some parents??

There is an Edward Chard listed in exam results at the University of Otago in 1916:

I realise this is not much help.

Presumably his marriage certificate should give his father's details?

CHARD, EDWARD FRANCIS - No mother's Surname.
GRO Reference: 1897 M Quarter in STROOD Volume 02A Page 575
Could have been born Dec 1896.

Edit. That one died in Strood, Kent same year. :(

Didn’t have to give parents’ names for college?

Trove has Rev Edward Chard in WA in the 1930s, but nothing about parents, sorry.

Without his marriage certificate, even if we did manage to identify the parents of the Edward Chard who is on the 1901 and 1911 censuses, how would we know that he is the right person?
