Trying to find records of children placed in the home 1957ish
I have tried contacting High Wycome council who tell me all records were destroyed in a fire BUT that fire was in the 2000s, home closed in 1986, really dont think records would have just been sitting there all those years.
I left there in 1967.
I really would like to know any specific reasons given for my brother and I going into the home, I know my parents parted but a lot doesnt make sense.
Also any documentation on me only being put up for adoption.
Any help greatly appreciated.
Thank you Angela
Sorry should have added our surname Whelan

You could try contacting Buckinghamshire Council: https://www.buckinghamshire.gov.uk/

Have you tried contacting the local archives, to see if they know anything about the paper trail? Or even local history societies?

Schools and asylums are slightly different, but records round here would simply moulder in basements and be abandoned when institutions closed, were it not for the prompt actions of a few people. Books have been rescued from skips and furnaces.

I do hope you find what you are looking for.

It is standard practice to tell people their records were destroyed in a fire. I find this absolutely disgraceful.

It sounds as if you were legally adopted in which case you are entitled to see your adoption file (which won't have been lying about in any Children's Home) and any other records.

Start by contacting your own local authority children 's department and ask them how to access your records. If they give you the brush off, contact your MP.

I wish you the best of luck. Come back and tell us how you get on.

Sorry although I was put up for adoption I was never adopted, would have liked to know who put me up and not my brother.

You may have been put up for adoption because you were more adoptable. It's as awful as that. Or maybe a relative wouldn't give permission (usually the father).

Yes always suspected my dad didnt want my brother adopted.
He had a dislike of women including those in his own family.
I am waiting on Buckinghamshire Council to reply to my request, I have checked archives nothing on there, nothing only records re Lord Carrington, boy he did not like the home!!
