My 3xgt grandfather James Purkis died in 1835 and was buried in Portsea. He was foreman at H.M. Dockyard.

I have been trying to see if he left a will, and I have found an adminstration for a Thomas Purkis granted to James Purkis of Duncan Hampshire. I want to see if there is any connection to my family but I can't see where Duncan is from Google maps.

Any ideas?

I can't see anything like it on GENUKI, Elizabeth. Are you certain it says Duncan?

Genuki has a Gazeteer: http://www.envf.port.ac.uk/hantsgaz/hantsgaz/HGANDX_F.HTM

The most likely is Duncombe.

Are you sure it is correctly spelled and not the name of a ship?

The was a Duncan Street in Landport, if that's any help?

I don't know if this link will work:

http://www.findmypast.co.uk/DeathDutySearchCountServlet

If you have FindMyPast enter "Purkis" as the name and then just have 1835 as the year.
It is the Canterbury Prerogative Court, the first entry at the top of the page.

I'd have to use credits to view that, sorry.

I've just looked, it certainly says Duncan, Hants

If that is death duties, then you can work out the connection by looking at the abbreviations used (and if you are clever, by the rate of tax)

It's only the index to death duties, Phoenix.

It and the admons - which may say something different - are both available at TNA

Thanks, everyone - I plan to go to the National Archives soon, so I shall have to put it on my "to do" list. My Purkises are extremely difficult pre-1800.
