This may seem a daft question to some - but I honestly don't know
if a Soldier was killed in France 20th July 1916 - would his death be registered here in England ???

Thanks Maggie - a bit complicated ?? lol.... too much for me I'm afraid - would take a long time to go through all those links...maybe on another day perhaps ...handy for me though - I appreciate it ...
ADDED How would I find out the wife of a soldier who died 20th July 1916 if it has his record but no wife named ?...is it impossible ??

Do you want to post up the details that you have, Allan, so we can see if we can find anything?

CWGC site has his service number as A/7234, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles), 1st Bn.

Scotland's People has two possible death records in the "Minor Records", Daniel Morrison age 24, 1916, Ref 129/AF6, Service Returns; Daniel Morrison, 1916, Ref 141/AF8, Service Returns. You would have to use credits on there to view the registrations but I'm not sure what details will be on them.

On Ancestry, "UK Soldiers Died in the Great War" has Daniel Morrison born Barony, Glasgow, death place France and Flanders, enlistment Hamilton, rank Private, number A/7234, Cameronian (Scottish Rifles), 1st Battalion.

Ancestry also has a link to his pension ledger and index card on Fold3, reference number 1/WM/2579, with other people mentioned being "Isabella Mand, guardian" and "Daniel Morrison, child". Not sure whether Isabella Mand could be a mistranscription? I haven't got a sub to Fold3 to check the image.

Aha! Here he is in Army Registers of Soldiers Effects and his widow is Isabella Marsh in 1919 - could she have remarried by then, to a Mr Marsh:

Also Scotland's People has his will available - it costs 10 credits to view.

Thanks Merry - could I ask if Daniel Morrison the son is still Morrison in 1921 census - or is he Daniel March - this is the grandad of the lady who is trying to go further back - Daniel would be 5-6 in 1921 census ...or am I not allowed to ask for 1921 census online ?? and what month did Isabella marry ? Daniel Morrison could only have been dead about a year ...

The 1921 Scottish census isn't available yet, but when it is I assume that it will be free to search for everyone, and then pay-per-view like the England and Wales one.

As for the month of the marriage, I guess you would have to pay for credits to view the marriage certificate to find that out.

Familysearch really has gone downhill - I have tried to find Isabella and her son in 1921 - and EVERY TIME I get DEATHS of the names first - page of them - even though I have clicked RESIDENCE ...I must be doing something wrong ...
