Patty Confusion!

Alexander Patty married Elizabeth Bridson at Marown, Isle of Man, in 1842. Unfortunately, the celebrant wasn't using the normal template and didn't record the fathers' names.

Alexander Patty's father was Thomas.
I'm trying to establish the parents of Elizabeth.

Alexander died in 1858 and Elizabeth took the younger children to the USA. Like many of the wider Patty family, they settled in Illinois. They are sometimes written as Paddy.

Many people in the USA say her father was James McCarry and her mother Catherine Cain. I'm not sure where they think Bridson comes in!

From the censuses Elizabeth appears to have been born c. 1816 / 1817.

There are two possible baptisms at Malew - one to William and Eleanor, which I think I have discounted. The other is to John and Jane in 1816.


The only other scenario I can think of is that Elizabeth was a widow when she married Alexander Patty.

Alternatively, the posters are privy to information I don't have!


I can't find any evidence linking Elizabeth Bridson to this family.

They would probably have been born around 1780.

Yes, there are some distinct Manx names, some of an Irish or Scottish origin.
One of the favoured Christian names was Caesar. There are lots of surnames that being with Q.

Can I ask why you have discounted William and Eleanor? I note that Elizabeth's first child is called Ellen, which would fit with the standard naming pattern.

OC, I found that their Elizabeth married a Mr Bell, I think. A couple of Bell children are with William and Eleanor on the census. Eleanor seems to be a name in most of the families!

Oh, yes, I remember - I found William's will on Family Search and he names his daughter Elizabeth Bell. It ties in with the censuses I found for the family.
