How am I related to DNA match

Hi, I need some help on figuring out how I am related to a DNA match. All I know is they are on my maternal side, shared DNa is 227cm over 16 segments. Can anyone workout the exact relationship. Any help would be great.

Thanks, I need a specific relationship workout though if that's possible as this side are born out of wedlock.

I have second cousins with a similar amount of shared DNA, but this is not an exact science: based on DNA alone, you can only deal with likelihoods. You don't inherit 25% DNA from a grandparent, but somewhere between 1% and 49%.

If you are using Ancestry, see if they share matches with you. Then search those matches for any surname you think that might be the link.

Thank you, I am using the Ancestry DNA, they share slot of matches but can't place them together.

Ancestry allows you to colour code your matches. You can take your unknown match, and all their shared matches and give them the same colour.

Then look at any other close matches and do the same thing.

This is time-consuming, but hopefully you will find some people will have more than colour, which will help to pin down the relationship.

On ancestry my son's DNA matches are:-

His oldest half aunt 787cm 11%

Her son so his half 1st cousin 412 6%

The daughter of youngest half uncle so still a half 1st cousin 706cm 10%

I cannot understand why half aunt and her full niece have over 700cms each but half aunts son has only 412cm's

Have you looked at trulines to see who and where people are matching with you though its people putting their own trees on which may or may not be correct.

You can't work it out just from number of shared cM's, sorry.

If both parties downloaded their raw DNA results from Ancestry and uploaded them to one of the sites that has a chromosome browser, might that help to narrow things down a bit?

No one could work it out based on that information. We'd need to see your tree and matches to even attempt to figure it out.

Look at the shared matches and see if you can narrow it down to your Mum's maternal or paternal side. Then reassess again.

Doing a Leeds chart might help too, if you have enough matches.
