I am searching for the birth registration of Isabella Reed.

Her dob is 6th March 1861 - taken from her baptism at St Hilda's, South Shields, Co. Durham.

On the censuses it states she was born at North Shields.

There are 2 births here:
https://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=BMD%2FB%2F1861%2F2%2FAZ%2F001060&parentid=BMD%2FB%2F1861%2F2%2FAZ%2F001060%2F151

One is South Shields reg. district, the other Tynemouth. If she were born in North Shields, it would be Tynemouth.

My question is, some of the entries are or appear to be in Italics. Is there any significance in this?

All her siblings have mmn Lesslie but I can't find an entry for Isabella with this.

Baptisms aren't usually listed by registration district? Sorry but I haven't got a sub to FMP to see what you mean about italics. I can see that on FreeBMD there is a birth reg for an Isabella Reed Apr-Jun 1861 South Shields, vol 10a p 511, and another for Isabella Reed same quarter, Tynemouth, vol 10b p 143. On the GRO site the MMNs are Bruce for the South Shields one and Young for the Tynemouth one.

Kate, the page is a typed list of names and not the usual handwriting.
I'm wondering if the mother's maiden name could have been mistranscribed.

It must be a bad scan because the image on Free BMD is perfectly normal.

I've decided her birth wasn't registered for some reason.

Sorry, it should be births.
I've corrected it.

That's why I think her birth wasn't registered. Her mother Jane Elizabeth Lesslie before marriage.

Re Italics
FMP has transcribed the FreeBMD pages and has put italics where there is a query over the correct reference ie where difficult to read or not sure. On FreeBMD when two people have transcribed it the same way it was probably because the 1st one wasn't quite sure and had it checked. Years ago that was what we were told to do. That page -FMP one - has lots of queries hence all the italics.
In the image attached I guess the 10b was queried.

If she was born in March, where is she in 1861 census?

I assume this is the rest of the family:

Kat, thanks for that. I was rather mystified by the italics.
I'd like to see the original hand-written page.

Oh, I was assuming that when Elizabeth said she was born in "Mary" that she meant May. I suppose it could also mean March! I remember Mary for May being used as an example of something back in the old FreeBMD transcribing days. Edit - I see in post #5 it is March.

I don't think there was much quality control when the volumes were retyped, and the original volumes, which admittedly were in a pretty parlous state, don't seem to have been kept.

The online indexes, being from the original records submitted, don't duplicate the introduced errors - but do create errors of their own.

Sorry about the typos. My fingers aren't doing what they should!

I don't think that's the right family, but I also want to know where she is in 1861?!

Ah, this must be them, spelled Reid: https://www.ancestry.co.uk/imageviewer/collections/8767/images/NBLRG9_3841_3844-0278?ssrc=&backlabel=Return&pId=12924924

Just Jane, Ann and baby Isabella. I suppose she could have been born in North Shields but taken back to South Shields to show off to family.
