I think I have found a second cousin on the 1939 Register at school.

https://search.findmypast.co.uk/record/browse?id=tna%2fr39%2f6935%2f6935g%2f022

She is Elizabeth Patricia White, born 4th July 1924. The initial looks wrong but the DOB is correct.

There is a red line through her name and it says "See page 21" with 21 crossed through but the replacement number is above and is redacted.
Can anyone make out the details, please.

Have looked at the image on Ancestry and it seems as if the 21 is crossed through in pink ink with initials above. Beside it in black ink looks like 24. I have copied the section but will have to look up how to post it on here. It's a bit clearer on Ancestry than on FMP.

Hope this helps.

Pat
PS have tried to upload it without success - sorry.

I think it must be either 23 or 25. I can only think that they have not opened the record on the other page. The initial could be a P if it was written faintly, because it is similar in shape to the first letter of Patricia a few lines further down.

Excuse the typo - I have just spotted it.

If you mean the thread title, Elizabeth, I have already corrected it!

Thanks for the replies.
Annoyingly it doesn't give her married surname. I'm not sure whether she married twice. She was married to a chap with the surname Crotty but I can't find a marriage for them.

If she is the Elizabeth Crotty on this passenger list, she could have got married in another country? (Perhaps Canada?)

It's one of those 1939 Register records where I would love to know how it came to be opened, but I suppose we will never know that.

Kate, thanks. I think the passenger list is attached to my daughter's Ancestry tree.

I see Elizabeth lived in Canada. She died in 1999 in Oxfordshire. I have a letter somewhere from her to my mother when her father died. Her father Leslie Herbert White and my grandmother were first cousins.

On the previous page you can see she is travelling with Bernard Crotty.

I was going to post his name but then I realised he was born in 1922 so I didn't, but I have subsequently found his death record.

I think the place is Merrow and not Merren.

Is this your Elizabeth White leaving England for Canada in 1952? Was your Elizabeth a nurse?

Yes, that's her. Her father lived in Dorset until he died.
He ran the family business in Guildford (large draper's shop) but rather disgraced himself by having an affair and then my great-great-grandmother decided not to leave him the bulk of her estate. His wife divorced him and Elizabeth lived with her.

My Aunt's record was opened years before she died because someone with the same name, but not the same birthday had died. There could easily be another Elizabeth White somewhere whose record remains incorrectly closed. Come 2025, I imagine that the entry that was used for your Elizabeth will be opened, and may (or may not!) show the surname Crotty

So they likely got married in Canada, then.

Bernard looks as though he was born at Dundalk, Eire, in Q4 1923.

I thought that was a different person?

I thought that the one born in Ireland died in the USA in 2018, but that "your" Bernard died in Croydon in 1976?

I'll need to have another look.

Country of intended future residence: Australia.

Janet, you must be talking about the other passenger list, from 1956?

Janet

My confusion, sorry. Yes, it's the 1956 one that says Australia. Thanks, Kite.
