Why the differences in cM's in my son's results.

My half sister has 787cM - his half aunt.
Her son has 412cM - his half 1st cousin
which I understand

So why does my half brother's daughter have 706cM compared to her full 1st cousin's 412cM.

Comparing with a distant relatives DNA results

My half sister has 214cM and listed as a close relative -2-3rd cousin

Half niece has 130cM - 2-3rd cousin - extended relative
Half nephew has 44cM - 4-6th cousin - extended relative
My son has 30cM - 4 -6th cousin - distant relative

i would have expected the three 1st cousins to have about the same results as they share the same common anncestor.

Both 412 and 706 are within the expected ranges for half 1st cousin. It's just the way DNA works.

I have found a 7th cousin with whom I share 37cM and a 3rd cousin (on another line) with 8cM in common.

In theory, 1st cousins could have no DNA in common. I certainly appear to have inherited far more from my maternal grandfather than from my maternal grandmother.

Confused again.

OH has done his DNA test so I compared his results with his sons so that I can work out all that are his father's line and not mine.

So printed off OH's closest results and then compared them with son's.

There's 47 names that appear on OH's list and not on son's list? Most of them I can work out where they fit in in the family tree by the shared matches.

However there's some I haven't a clue about even with the shared matches and their shared matches.

There's also 3 that only has just OH and one name from the list with no other shared matches.

Your son has only inherited half of his father's DNA, so that is why your OH has DNA matches who don't match to your son.

Sometimes it can be difficult or impossible to figure out how a particular DNA match or group of matches are related to you / your OH, for instance if they don't have a family tree or if there are ancestors in someone's family tree who aren't the biological ancestors. I have plenty of DNA matches whose connection I haven't figured out yet.

I thought DNA would make things easier but it seems not
