William Mealing died in Broadmoor in 1908 and I have a list of his personal effects. The list is stamped "received" and signed "Mrs. Ellen Mealing" but I don't know who she is!

William's brother Richard did have a wife called Ellen, but when Richard died Ellen remarried in the 1880s.

I can't find another female called Ellen who would have married into the family - and I can't find an Ellen Mealing on 1911 census.

Any help welcome!

There's a married Ellen in the Atkinson Morley Hospital in Wimbledon in 1901. Any use?

I think she is Ellen Kennedy the wife of Daniel Wm Mealing. Is he connected?

She is down as S Ellen Mealing in 1911.

They are in Kensington in 1911 and this is the birth of the husband:

Births Jun 1868

MEALING Daniel William Chelsea 1a 268

I probably should know whereabouts your Mealings come from, but I've forgotten!

Merry thanks for looking.

I don't think this is the right lot. My Mealings, as I should have said earlier, were from Rendcomb(e) in Gloucestershire. William was the eldest of 8 children and 3 of his brothers went to Glamorgan, one of them eventually emigrated to the USA.

Puzzling.

Can't find an Ellen anybody marrying a Mealing, Mea*, Mel* or Mal* in any likely area either.

I looked at Eleanors and Helens etc etc and couldn't find anyone either. Pity they didn't ask her for her address :(

Indeed Merry. Pity it wasn't my gt grandfather who went to get them, or I might have inherited the stuff!!!!

Still can't find her. Anyone got any bright ideas?

Only unhelpful stuff like she was going by her middle name or wasn't really a Mealing!

Do you know if he had a will? If he did there might be some clues in that. Also do you have any burial details like who arranged or paid for it?

Jackie

No, he didn't have a Will and he was buried in unmarked grave in Broadmoor.

Thanks anyway. I just wish I could think of a way of working out who she was.

Did Richard's wife, Ellen, divorce from her new OH? Or would she have jsut kept that name for use at Broadmoor to make things simpler?

Just throwing out suggestions.

I wouldn't think so Toni. Divorce was still rare then. She was around in 1901 with her husband in Swindon though I haven't found her as Ellen May in 1911. She was orn 1857 in Leigh, Wiltshire.

Even if she had divorced, I don't see that she would have reverted to her previous married name. I am assuming the signature is the name she went by but don't think she is Richard's widow. Can't find a likely death for her either. So tantalising!
