Where can you find out how old a house is?

I've google earth an address but can't tell if it would be the same house as on a certificate or another has replaced it.

You could tell us the address and we could give an opinion! :D

Thanks Merry

It's 1 Howarth/Haworth St, Sunderland c1917

I can't make my mind up whether they were there then.

The 1911 census says there was a family of 8 living in 6 rooms at number 1. Number 3 is described as a cottage with 5 rooms. Don't know whether that helps at all?

Oh, there was also a 1 Howarth Street South, with 5 rooms.

Looks like it was there in 1881 although you can't be sure its the same property

They look like miners cottages to me.

I'd say the property for that address on Google street view is definitely old enough, but I'm surprised that property had as many rooms as either of the properties Kate mentioned.

They built backwards I think but yes I see what you mean.

Edit: just looked on Street Google, not even double fronted and if you go down side street you can see size of original building, looks like a modern extension there but could be on the house next door.

I wondered if the street name had moved. I will see if I can find an old map later. I am hindered by a fat can on my lap so can only type/search etc with one finger!

IR 135/9/64 is themap reference for the Valuation Act map which was conducted round about the same time as the 1911 census. The associated field books describe the housing: telling you how old it was, how many rooms etc

On the Old Maps website, I looked at 1897 and 1919 maps and 1 Howarth St appears on both those in exactly the same place and the building exactly the same shape in both instances as on Google street view!

Thanks everyone - I will take it that it is the original building.

I think they were probably homes for shipyard workers rather than miners - as grandfather was a riveter at a shipyard and I don’t think there was a mine that close
