....... could they please help me throw some light on this one?

While turning out some drawers I found an old newspaper clipping about one

of my mother's relatives drowning in a dock on his 21st Birthday. I vaguely

remember hearing this story as a child, but have no idea of his relationship.

His name was Francis Douglas Day and his address was given as The

Handfords, Derrington, Stafford. He's described as a Lance Corporal, and

walked straight out of the mess room & into the water during the blackout,

so I presume it was sometime between 1939 - 45. His father's name was

Edward Day & the inquest, which gave a verdict of Accidental Death, was

held at New Ferry.I haven't been able to find anything else out about him &

am just curious to know where he fits in to my mother's family.

Births Mar 1919 (>99%)
Day Francis D Wright Stafford 6b 11

The report saays he had an elder brother aged 22. There were four other children, so I assume they were girls. Father was a retired shoe operative who had worked at Lotus Ltd.

In 1911, Edward was aged 38, Emma 26, with his father Thomas Hnery Day. The days were born in Stafford, but Emma came from Eaton, Cheshire. Even then they were at The Handfords, Derrington.

Which side do you need to trace?

Emma's parents were William Wright a gamekeeper from Barnham Broom, nORFOLK and Mary Jane Ballance from ?Tixall? Staffs.

Aha - think Emma was my maternal grandmother's sister, but need to check that out.
Thanks to those who have pitched in.
Such a sad story.

I remember a lot a Wrights being in Norfolk when I had FMP sub. Would be great if we shared them!
If Emma is who I think she is I was taken to meet her when we relocated from London.
