Where will I find details of the royal Irish rifles campaign in ww1

The National Archives holds the War Diaries.

If you put "royal irish rifles" "wo 95" in Discovery it gives you the references. Currently, if you sign in you can view them for free.

I don't know much about army records, but it looks as if you would need to know the battallion.

You need to find the battalion of the man you're interested in, from either his service records or medal records and then look at the War Diaries for the unit. As Phoenix has said, search the TNA Catalogue Ref WO 95 by regiment and Battalion
