there are two marriages that match William Hilton to Ellen Smith
one in Leigh in 1892 one in Liverpool in 1893

Going by the years married on 1911 I ordered the Liverpool as neither area was particularly close to where they're from.

The cert arrived today and says:

3rd April 1893
St Matthews Liverpool
William Hilton, 30, Farmer, F: James Hilton, Farmer
Ellen Smith, 34, F: Richard Smith, Farmer
wits: John Gray, Hannah Gray

Now I can't really find anyone that matches in the earlier census, and the age for Ellen is way out (from 1911/1901 she's born c1868, marriage cert puts her about 1859).

I just need 2nd opinions on whether I plumped for the wrong certificate.

What are their addresses on the marriage certificate, Zoe?

sorry for the delay - just got home from work

The address for both on marriage is Boundary Street, which I assume is in Liverpool as that's the parish

Found William Hilton on the 1881 census easily, but he is a farm servant away from home, so that's no help. And now I've found out that Haskayne was in Downholland township, I've found William Hilton age 9 in Haskayne village in 1871, but he's a visitor, grrr. It has his birthplace as Halsall, but I think the enumerator has got carried away with his dittoes and that could be wrong.
Anyway, unfortunately that doesn't give us his father's name.

Where did you get the cert from? The GRO or the local register office? I'm wondering if Ellen's age was supposed to say 24 and it's been copied out wrong somewhere along the line.

Okay, going at it from another angle, in 1901 there is a William Hilton age 36 in Leigh with wife Ellen age 38 born Leigh, and their oldest child is Violet age 8. Unfortunately Lancs BMD haven't put the mother's maiden name on their index for this couple's children to confirm she's a Smith, but there is a Smith family living next door with head Thomas 46 born Leigh, so maybe we can track him back and see if this Ellen could be his sister, which would make it pretty certain the Leigh marriage isn't yours.

I've been tracking back on the same assumption as you - that the cert from GRO has the age wrong and she should be 24.

I have Ellen Smith born Rainford daughter of Richard Smith, Agricultural Labourer, born Rainford c 1842

1871: http://search.ancestry.co.uk/iexec/?htx=view&r=5538&dbid=7619&iid=LANRG10_3860_3862-0424&fn=Richard&ln=Smith&st=r&ssrc=&pid=16266713

1881: http://search.ancestry.co.uk/iexec/?htx=view&r=5538&dbid=7572&iid=LANRG11_3729_3733-0431&fn=Richard&ln=Smith&st=d&ssrc=&pid=9396671

By 1891 Richard is a widow and Ellen isn't at home:

Just trying to see if there's an obvious Ellen away from home in 1891.

Kate - that's the William I was drawn to when I was trying to get an idea of who was available before the certificate arrived.

I was dreading it might be him because of the lack of parents!!

According to 1911 Thomas SMith has been married to wife Harriet for 34 years (i.e. c1876) so why I can't find them together on 1891 or 1881 is beyond me.

Not even their hoards of children are helping

AHA!!! Have them in 1891 where they've changed their birthplaces to Bedford:

According to Genuki Bedford is a township/chapel in the parish of Leigh

You're right, there are way too many Smiths in Lancashire
