I wonder if someone would be kind enough to help me with this please as I no longer have access to Ancestry?

I am looking for Annie Smith in 81 and 91. She was born c 1875 in "Great Bridge" Birmingham and her father was Thomas Smith (born about 1826, died 6 August 1890, Birmingham - he was a gas worker).

I have her forward from her marriage in 1894, it's backwards I want to go, especially who was her mother?

Thanks in advance

Two to choose from in 1891:

A rule maker, neice of Thomas Ganley a licensed victualler

A servant in the Simmonds household in Aston.

There's rather a lot of them in 1881 but I can't find one with a father Thomas with a likely occupation.

Thanks UJ - I looked on the 1881 LDS census and couldn't find a suitable one either. How very odd, because the person who gave me this information wanted to know "if Thomas really was Annie's father".

I don't suppose either of the 1891 lived at Lander St or Cardigan St? Lander St was the address given by Annie Smith at her marriage in 1894, Cardigan St was where thomas Smith died in 1890. Both these addresses in the St Saviour, Saltley area.

Thankyou!

Does dad have to be that old?

There's an Annie b 1875 with father Thomas 31 who is a labourer in the gas works but Annie is born in Toll End Staffs, but when I google that with Great Bridge there are street maps out there covering both, so they must be close. Great Bridge appears to be on the county boundary of Staffs, Warwickshire and Worcestershire.

Anyway, the wife of that Thomas is called Hannah 30 also from Toll End. Other children are John T 14 William 8 and Susannah 1 month who is the only one b in Brum. They are living at 14 Westminster Terrace, Aston.

That's the ones I meant, but dad aged a bit before death, didn't he?!!

Oh, I wonder if we can find that Thomas still alive in 1891 to exclude them?

Staffordshire and Warwickshire borders have changed.

Handsworth used to be Staffordshire now definitely Birmingham. Same applies to lots of towns. Many former Staffordshire records are now in the Birmingham Central Library.

Has anyone got Thomas's death cert for the address, so it can be checked in 1891?

Oooh, you've all been busy while I've been watching telly!

Yes, I wonder if Thomas HAS to be born 1824? I don't know where my informant got the information about Thomas 1824, but I'm wondering if he was the grandfather, not the father?

The information about Thomas' death in 1890 came from church records - he was buried at St Saviour's, Saltley, Birmingham, the same church where Annie married in 1894. The address is either Cadogan St or Cardigan St.

If Thomas 1824 was father of Thomas married to Hannah it may be my contact has confused the two Thomases and assuymed the older one is Annie's father, because that is the only info she has.

Phew.

I must ask contact if Annie's father is deceased at her marriage. Again this is from church records, not certs.
