Thanks for adding me. What is a good computer program re to use? I have a paper copy of my dad's side that his 2and cousin did. He actually visited the Isle of Man, found out family church & a image of our coat of arms. The tree he made dates back to year 924 (I think) Harald Fairhair is the 1st name on it.

Sorry, I'm not quite clear - are you asking people to recommend a free program? I use Family Tree Maker but the free version isn't very useful. If you are asking which free one to use, hopefully someone on here will have a recommendation.

The tree sounds great, but I would always recommend that you check, starting from yourself and working back. I have a family tree that my Granny did for her mother's side of her tree, but sorry to say when I did my own research I found she had it wrong after a few generations back.

Also sorry to say, families don't have a coat of arms - the coat of arms just belongs to one person at a time, and is passed down to the male heir in the next generation.

I would recommend Family Tree Maker, then, personally, but there are many others available. You should be able to get a free trial of most of them to see how you like them.

Family Historian is also a very good program.

Welcome Cdahlen.

I use Legacy. You can download the free version to see if it suits you before buying the full version. I found the free version perfectly adequate for the first couple of years of my research before I upgraded.

I also use Family Tree Maker, and I've been very happy with it, but I believe it's being discontinued.

So jealous! My Manx line is stuck firmly at about 1700, due to a lack of records and the problem of the clan system.

Most family tree programs have a trial or free version, so you can try before you buy.
I have used both Legacy and Rootsmagic, and would recommend them both.
A good online site is Tribalpages, where you can upload your tree; there are both paid and free options.

What?? Why?? When??

I love this program. I don't want it to disappear.

Sorry, I thought it had been discontinued altogether, but in fact Ancestry sold it to another company:
