...... but was the 1939 register used again later? My Mum is shown with her

maiden name crossed through & her married name recorded although she

didn't marry until Dec 1944. On the left hand side there's a note saying

'ZNA M 10.1.45'

I think the date part is when the marriage was entered into the GRO perhaps M means Married. I will have a look at some of mine.

Edit: just looked and not sure now, one of my Aunts got married March 1956 and the date, if it is a date, next to her is 13.10.58. My mum has a date next to her name 26.9.45 preceded by ATA! Possibly Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA) I thought she was in the ATS.

It was used - I think until the 1990s. It notes the warwork occupations - like ARP warden. It shows women's change of name when they married and other changes of status. We have yet to see the right hand page in full, which I understand has details of deaths.

Thanks, both. I see she was just a few minutes away from where I now live, working as

an invoice clerk in a country house that had been turned into military offices. Family home

was over the border in N Wales.

So I now know what my aunts is she had CRM283 13.10.58 it is change of surname so it took her two years to officially change her surname after marriage I assume.

PS Can't find my father, though. Suppose he could have already been out of the country.

ZNA is the area code for Flintshire Enumeration District and Hawarden Borough/District.
