From the Western Star and Roma Advertiser, Saturday 26 November 1881
Cardell - At Tickera, South Australia,at the residence of his son-in-law Henry Bruce, William Harris Cardell, aged 90 years, and father of Chas William E.b. Cardell, chemist, Roma

Evening Journal (Adelaide,SA)Tue 30 Aug 1870
William. Harris Cardell was charged, on the information of Inspector Ray, of Kensington and Norwood, with keeping a house of illfame.
Mr. J. W. Downer for defendant.Informant stated that defendant had been cautioned as to the character of persons residing in one of his houses, and promised to get rid of them. Andrew Smith said he was quite "intosticated," and " could not swear to nothing." Another witness said the place was a house of "ill-flame," and he had seen men come out with their "waists round women's arms," and afterwards corrected

himiself on the latter point. Had seen a man go in and stay all day till late in the evening.

The evidence was not deemed sufficient. Dismissed.

Thanks, Macbev.

I'm transcribing the will of his mother. They are an interesting family. Any indication of when he emigrated?

They can't agree on his age, which is understandable, I suppose. One report said he was 88.

Thanks, that was the son mentioned who was a chemist.

I love the entry about the dog. I wonder if he was retrieved.

Thanks, Letitia and Parminter are family names. William had a brother called Parminter and it was his mother's maiden name.

I think I saw Letitia on the 1851 census, but not her brother. Getting late here, so I'll have another look tomorrow. Do you know if the mother died before the emigration? At least, if the family went to S.A. we know they were not transported.

Macbev, your help is much appreciated.

William Harris Cardell didn't marry until 1841, in his late 40s. I didn't think it was him at first. His bride was Caroline Augusta Hempel.

Letitia and Charles were baptised at Probus, Cornwall in 1841 and 1843 respectively.

Both William and Caroline were from well-to-do families.

Thanks, Macbev, you have been most helpful. When I transcribe wills for my OPC parish I do get quite involved with the people mentioned.

I'll take a look at Trove after breakfast myself. The parents of William had 11 children and I was interested to see what happened to them all.
