Hi,
Any thoughts of suggestions about this family would be gratefully received.

I am trying to find out a few more details about William Knott, born 1806 in Ashby de la Zouch, Leicestershire.

This is him in 1841:

https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv=1&dbid=8978&h=6384191&tid=29137161&pid=212119779087&hid=1012741902326&usePUB=true&_phsrc=MpT8791&_phstart=default&usePUBJs=true&currentPageIsStart=

...and in 1851:
https://www.ancestry.co.uk/interactive/8860/STSHO107_2025_2025-0473/8667069?backurl=https://www.ancestry.co.uk/family-tree/person/tree/29137161/person/212119779087/facts/citation/722166693162/edit/record

His wife, Elizabeth (formerly Davenport) must have died between the birth of their last child Rebecca (born in 1846 in West Bromwich) and the 1851 census. I haven't found her death yet.

I think that this might be him in 1861:
https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv=1&dbid=8767&h=20428509&tid=29137161&pid=212119779087&hid=1012741902318&usePUB=true&_phsrc=MpT8795&_phstart=default&usePUBJs=true&currentPageIsStart=

but it would mean he had remarried to have the three younger children. I am assuming the "Hemer R" is Rebecca.

Then, the same family again in 1871 (with his 87 year old father too!):
https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv=1&dbid=7619&h=2477410&tid=29137161&pid=212119779087&hid=1012741902317&usePUB=true&_phsrc=MpT8803&_phstart=default&usePUBJs=true&currentPageIsStart=

In summary, I am trying to find a death for his first wife, Elizabeth and then details about his second family. At the moment, I can see a possible marriage in 1854, but cannot see birth registration details for the children.
Mary, c1853
William, c1855
Joseph, c1859

Thanks for looking...

William Knott married Mary BROWN or Mary CREATON in 1854 in Wednesbury St Bartholomew.

Looks like a Mary died in JAS 1859 in West Bromwich district aged 32 who could be her, I suppose.

Tom, your second link (the one that is supposed to be to the 1851 census entry) takes me to your tree and tells me to contact you for more information because it's a private tree.

It was Mary Brown, a widow.

Age matches for that death to be hers.

Sorry Kate! I've fixed it.

Also, you say Rebecca died in 1846 but is on the 1861 census? Or did you mean to say she was born in 1846?

Sorry, doesn't read very clearly (typing too quickly). Rebecca was born in 1846, so Elizabeth must have died after 1846, but before the census in 1851.

William Knott married Mary Brown, and William Round married Mary Cleaton.

Ah, just spotted this post. So Mary's maiden name was Shipley.

Hmmm, I may be barking up the wrong tree entirely, but there is a William Knott birth in 1856 with MMN Thornley and an Emma Rebecca Knott in 1863 also with MMN Thornley.

Mary Shipley married George Brown in 1847 at West Bromwich All Saints, and her father is John Shipley on FreeREG. So that all fits.

As for Thornley, did one of William's sons marry a Thornley and name a daughter after the first Emma Rebecca? (Explaining my post #10 above.)

In which case, I can't find birth regs for William and Mary's children either!

Hmm. There is a possible John Knott/Ann Thornley married in 1849, with a potential couple matching them in 1851.

I think this John is William's brother though.

FreeREG has the baptism of William Knott, son of William and Mary of Lyng, 28 Jan 1855 at Christ Church, West Bromwich. And Joseph 16 Jan 1859 at Holy Trinity, West Bromwich.

There is the baptism of a Mary Brown, daughter of George and Mary Brown, 29 Jun 1851 at Christ Church, West Bromwich, abode Moore St, father's occupation miner. Birth registered Apr-Jun 1851 MMN Shipley.

Close enough! That explains the Emma Rebecca coincidence, anyway.

Thank you.
You've just beaten me to it. I have found Mary Brown on the GRO site with MMN Shipley.

Now to find the details for William and Joseph and then the death of Elizabeth (the first wife and my direct ancestor).

Ages on the 1851 census are a bit out (or may be a different couple). Have found William's son with children that match the MMN Thornley now.

Maybe William and Joseph weren't registered.

Aha!

William Nott, MMN Brown registered JFM 1855

and a possible:

Joseph Nock, MMN Shipley registered OND 1858

And a son Mark Nott (MMN Shiply) born in 1856 and died in 1857 (Free Reg)
