Just noticed, when looking at the latest additions to the British Newspaper Archive, that they have recently added some Indian papers and some Canadian ones. But the "browse by country" option only shows England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales.

Ontario, Canada does come up in the "browse by region", and so do various regions of India. Quite annoying if you aren't an expert on Indian geography and would like to select the whole country!

I would be interested to know whether these are included with the newspapers in the Findmypast "Pro" sub. I know that the old FMP (UK) sub only used to include the British newspapers, not the Irish ones, but now that the only UK sub which includes newspapers at all is the Pro one which includes "all other global records", I would expect it to include Irish, Indian, and Canadian newspapers as well, plus the US ones which aren't on the British Newspaper Archive. Can anyone with a Pro sub confirm this?

I have a World sub to FMP; no idea if it's Pro or not, it doesn't say, but it does include Irish newspapers.

Anyway, India isn't coming up at all.

Canada is included, but the only states covered are Alberta, Manitoba, Newfoundland and Saskatchewan.

Thanks for the info, Mary. I wonder whether they will appear on FMP in a few days, maybe, if they're new on the BNA.

Could be, I'll check again in a few days if I remember, and let you know.

If you have access to something called Proquest though a library subscription they have the Times of India newspapers. I do find it difficult to search though.

Ah, today's "Findmypast Fridays" mentions the "Friend of India and Statesman" and the "Madras Courier", with click-through links to FMP, so I know they are on there at least. And they are included in "British newspapers". Same for the "Times of India" a few weeks ago. But I don't see anything in there about the Canadian newspapers.

Ooh, I have found one of my ancestors in the Madras Courier! I think I will be subscribing to FMP very soon.

Also, browsing through the "British Newspaper" titles on FMP, the Toronto papers do come up.

Oh yes; when I looked yesterday I went straight to the newspapers page and only looked under US and World newspapers; it never occurred to me to look in the British ones.
If you search under "Place" for India you won't find it, but if you search for Madras, it's there.

If you click Filter by Place and put India in the search box at top right, there are matches for papers from Bombay, Calcutta, Madras and Serampore.

Thank. I know what I'll be doing later today.

Just a note that the search is not fool proof. I can not get my 2g grandfathers death notice to appear in the search results even when I narrow it down to the exact date.

I know it exists as I already have a copy of it.

The newspapers are indexed using OCR software but it is not very accurate.

I now know my 5g grandmother's initials - B. B. She was 95 in 1853.

;( :d

At least I know she existed.
