I read a book about gypsy culture in which the author (a gypsy) stated that it would be almost impossible for an outsider to construct a family tree because gypsies rarely gave their real names to authorities and changed their false names according to who was asking! Yet another echo in the gypsy culture of their possible jewish ancestry.
