I think it is Carpenter, there are a few carpenters down the page.
It is weird you can see someone's hand on the scan!

I have finally discovered that this branch of OH's family changed their name (or the vicar did it for them!) from Eskdale to Estill!
There is an excellent book by (I think) George Redmonds, describing how Yorkshire names changed and morphed into other names.

That must be an interesting read, Phoenix.
I have marriages for this family where the bride/groom signs as Estill but the vicar records them as Eskdale.
