Hello,
Would some kind person with a Find My Past account, please give me the details of Thomas Goode's marriage in 1914 in Rugby.
I assume it is to Helen Woods and I am hoping he is a 60+ year old widower.

He has been most elusive for many years!

Thank you

Edit... think that might just be the index, and not the actual marriages.

Never mind!

It is the index, but they do say it's Helen Woods

Thanks Phoenix.
Might have to buy it from the GRO.

lol Tom - we last looked at this in 2011!

You said previously...

Family legend has it that his oldest son made milliopns and went to France

Looks like his eldest son emigrated to Wales!

The marriage for the son you looked at before seems to be right (1920 to Mary H Finchette). Anyway, no doubt you have all this already!

Thomas sr is mentioned here:

Rugby Advertiser 31 March 1917

Some chap failed to purchase the correct railway ticket (they said it was systematic fraud because he had done it before) and was summoned before the court. Thomas is mentioned in his capacity as a police officer - having followed the defendant on the train from Rugby to Birmingham.

Now I'm searching Detective Inspector Goode without his first name, there are mentions in these papers (1917onward - there are more before):

06 October 1917 - Chester Chronicle - Chester, Cheshire

07 July 1917 - Tamworth Herald - Tamworth, Staffordshire

16 January 1920 - Rugby Advertiser - Rugby, Warwickshire

I'm fairly sure all those are him as they all involve the railway and minor fraud.

There's also this one which is probably him:

05 August 1922 - Birmingham Daily Gazette - Birmingham, Warwickshire

Two men were charged with theft from a jewellers at Sydenham Road (Birmingham?) and attempted murder of a police officer. There is a mention of "Divisional Detective Inspector Goode" who was present when the charges were read to the men.

Bother, that last one might not be him as I just saw this obit:

25 August 1925 - Western Mail - Cardiff, Glamorgan

Divisional-detective-inspector Goode was born at Caerphilly, near Cardiff, his parents being farmers in a small way...….

So that's not your man and so possibly the last newspaper entry I posted above isn't him either.

EDIT having said that, (btw, the obit's name is Walter) and it does say his career was in London, so what would he have been doing in Birmingham to hear those charges read? Unfortunately Sydenham Road (where the jewellers was) could be anywhere, so maybe not Birmingham. I think there were several reports on this attempted murder case, so if I read more of them I might be enlightened. Have to go out now though.....

Might this be the widow?

No clear matches for Woods on 1911 though.

Ooh, so on the 1939 Register Helen Goode's dob was 14 Nov 1864 and here we have a baptism:

Liverpool, England, Catholic Baptisms, 1741-1916

Helena Woods
born 14 Nov 1864
bap 20 Nov 1864
St Nicholas, Liverpool
Parents Johannis and Maria

I wasn't really expecting Helen to be a spinster in 1914!

Of course we don't know for sure she married your Thomas, but it's probably likely as she was middle aged herself.

This may well be Helen in 1911, though her age is a bit off (possibly the age given is the age she was when taken on in the house!)

Helen Goode death Jan-Mar 1945 Whitchurch district, age 80.

Shrewsbury, where Helen was living in 1939, was in Atcham district. There are these two death registrations:

Deaths Dec 1928

Goode Thomas 74 Atcham 6a 729

Deaths Mar 1933

Goode Thomas 82 Atcham 6a 1032

Neither made a will (nor any of the others who died 1920-1939 of approx. the right age). Maybe the second one is closer for age (EDIT actually, there's nothing much in it!!)?

Merry

I think the Thomas Goode who died in 1928 is this one in 1911:

77 Belle Vue Road, Shrewsbury, Shropshire

Thomas Goode, head m 57 mineral merchant's salesman b Bromfield, Shropshire
Ann Goode wife m 58 b Pontesbury, Shropshire

Ann's death was registered in 1929:

Deaths Mar 1929

Goode Ann 76 Atcham 6a 1108

Her probate entry, below, says she is a widow, so her husband is very likely to be the 1928 death in Atcham district.

GOODE Ann of 77 Belle Vue Road Shrewsbury widow died 11 Mar 1929 Administration Shrewsbury 9 April to Thomas Richard Goode painter, Effects £175 14s 11d

So that leaves the 1933 death as the most likely for the husband of Helen and very likely to be your Thomas :)

Yes, Merry. It was 2011 when we were last looking at this. I have kept coming back to it, but never had any successes.

Thank you for all your help yet again (and Kate!). I shall order the marriage certificate and the second death certificate.

I am sending my Grandma's DNA off this weekend, so it has made me look at this branch of her tree again. I am trying to renew my ancestry subscription, but it won't load for some reason.
