On 8th Feb 1790 Robert and Ann Gale baptise their daughter Mary in Woodmansterne, Surrey

On 12th Feb 1791, Robert and Ann Gale baptise another daughter - Mary Ann also in Woodmansterne, Surrey.

Reasonable then to assume that the first Mary died before February 1791, and indeed there is a burial in Woodmansterne on May 4th 1790 for Mary Gale ........ Neugent.

Neugent??? lol! What on earth?? I have no idea what this means.
As a name, it is uncommon in Surrey, has no connection with the family and when it does appear, it is spelt "Nugent" without the first "e".

I am wondering if it has some other meaning, but having rummaged through a Latin dictionary, I can find nothing useful.

Anyone have any ideas?

This might be the bap for the same child:

Mary Gale Nugent

Rusper, Sussex, England
William,
Elizabeth

(14 miles between the two parishes)

Well done Merry! That's brilliant.

So, just have to find a burial for Mary now.

Heck of a coincidence though lol

While I agree that it looks like Mary died maybe she didn't. I have a family with an Eliza and Elizabeth and I was sure Eliza had died before Elizabeth but no, both survived and married. They might have liked the name Mary so had 2, Mary and Mary Ann

This looks like a mis-transcribed burial record for Mary Ann:

Mary Ann Gate
Burial
b abt 1790
bur 18 Jul 1804 aged 14
Woodmansterne, St Peter

Thanks ladies. Id already noted the 1804 burial as that of the Mary Ann born in 1791. I was hoping / assuming to find one for a Mary before then.

I also have an Eliza and an Elizabeth in one family and also a Mary Ann and an Ann Mary in one family, but a Mary and a Mary Ann? Not sure about that one - why on earth would the parents do that??

But, I can't find a burial for the first Mary. I've gone through the PRs of all the family's "haunts" just in case they were elsewhere when she died, with no luck.

They may have thought of Mary Ann as a different name from just Mary.

I'm coming round to the idea, in the absence of any other explanation. ;)

My maternal great-aunts were all known by their second names, all having the first name Mary. The family at that time was R.C. My grandfather was given the first name Frank, even though his elder brother was also Frank, though he died a few months later.

I have a family with both Mary and Mary Ann as daughters.

I have always thought that Mary was Mary

and Mary Ann was probably pronounced 'Marianne' so no confusion in the the family.

Yes Chris, that was I am now thinking - that what we hear (and read) as Mary Ann, the parents were hearing Marianne and as neither were literate, it didn't make any difference how it was written.
