Allison, can you please confirm that your mother has consented for you to post this, or that she is no longer living, as our site rules do not allow details of living people to be posted without their consent?

edit - I have found her death registration now. 24 Mar 1990 Orange, California, giving her father's surname as Matthews and mother's maiden name as Kerr.

There is some information on here about how to obtain adoption records in California:

http://www.cdss.ca.gov/Adoption-Services/Adoptee-Information/Adoption-Records

and some Los Angeles County court info:

That's interesting - her birth appears on the California Birth Index, 1905-1995 on ancestry. Jean Ellen Matthews born 20 Jun 1923, mother's maiden name Kerr, birth county Los Angeles. Ancestry's information about this database recommends you order a copy of the certificate via VitalChek, but I don't have any personal knowledge of whether that's the best way. Or have you already tried ordering the birth certificate? I don't know how the California Birth Index was put together, but in the UK an adoption would not appear on the birth index with the adoptive name. So I suppose my question is, are you certain she was adopted?

Oh, o.k., I have found some more information about the California Birth Index, and yes, it includes entries with the adoptive name:

Allison, you have two different usernames now! Can you say which one you want to keep, please (Novas 1 or Newbie64), and I will merge them.
