Joseph Walmsley was born in 1850. I believe this is the GRO reference : WALMSLEY, JOSEPH
GRO Reference: 1850 D Quarter in NEWCASTLE UNDER LYME Volume 17 Page 99

It is possible he was registered at Stoke on Trent as neither reference has a mother's maiden name but I think the first is correct.

The next couple of children are baptised at St Giles Newcastle under Lyme, which is where I think Joseph would have been baptised as well.

I was wondering if anyone could find Joseph's baptism.

The next few children are X Hawkins Walmsley then the rest are just Hawkins as the parents marry. Joseph later becomes a Hawkins but I don't feel that is his father.

Mother Elizabeth Walmsley, potential father and subsequent husband William Hawkins.

I assume this is them on the 1851 census, just to get a more accurate dob for Joseph:

Lower Street, Newcastle under Lyme
Elizabeth Wombsley Head Unmard 19 Silk piecer Newcastle Staffs
Joseph Wombsley Son 6 mos At home Do Do.

1851 census date was 30 Mar, so Joseph was born about Sep 1850, which would fit with his birth being registered Oct-Dec 1850.

Yes that's them Kate. That spelling is awful and why it is so hard to find.

She had others baptised that were illegitimate so I can't work out why she didn't do Joseph.

Thanks for trying

Still, even if we did find a baptism I don't suppose it would give his father's name.

no, I don't think it would. He is the only child I don't have one for and I'd like to fix it.

I am going to buy the pdf from the GRO when I can.

For future ref: Joseph married, using the name Hawkins, to Martha Ellen Walker in 1877. His sister Sarah signed the register and she also signed the register for their sister Julia, which is how I decided it was my Joseph. Joseph's father was William Hawkins, although I accept this does not mean he is the biological father and could just be the mother's husband.
