Do they come with a sub and/or do you need a sub to see the results?

They have a cheap test at the moment and I thought of getting Dad to do the test and as my sub runs out soon, thought I'd use his if it comes with the test.

Just trying to save money and he wont do anything with it online anyway, so I need to access it.

You don't need a sub to view the results and you don't normally get a sub included with the test though there may sometimes be special offers which do that. But if you get a test for your Dad and he is not interested in using the ancestry account, you can set yourself as "manager" of his DNA results.

The DNA test is separate to the sub. I made my Dad do his DNA and put me as his manager - I also manage our daughters and our niece.

Without a sub linked to the DNA test, you can see the results of ethnicity and who your matches are, but you cannot see any details about how you might be connected.

Not that you can tell from a lot of the matches anyway - if they don't put a family tree on ancestry, and such a lot don't, then anything less than 100 cm match is probably too far away to be know to you easily.

I can tell where some of Dad's match, by their surnames, but only because I have researched down to his generation. Other names and nicknames, I have no idea about and even looking at some family trees, I have no idea which family is the link - not even by the areas they lived in.

Thanks. Dad's interest is what I tell him, he wont research himself, so he would make me an account manager.

I'll keep searching for a cheap sub and see what deals happen before Christmas.

Next question - if you manage someone else's results can they still see them and any matches? If someone contacts you about a match do they know they are speaking to a manager or do they think it is the person directly?

From the ancestry info page:
Unless the test is deleted, a DNA test always remains on the account on which it was activated (the owner’s account). When someone becomes a manager, the owner’s test appears on both the manager’s account and on the owner’s account.

So yes, they would still be able to see their own results and matches.

The people who have that person as a match will see them listed as something like "AA (managed by Fred Bloggs)", so they will know they are contacting the manager.
