View Full Version : Liverpool???!!!
Thanks to Kite alerting me to Devon marriage licences, I have discovered that my ancestor John Edwards, b 1760, who happily had a family in East Portlemouth Devon born in the late 1700s, was in Liverpool in 1814.
He died before 11/11/1820. I have never found his burial - possibly because I have been looking in the wrong county!!!
His wife Peternell died 11 November 1820 and is commemorated in East Portlemouth by a stone, but her name is not in the burial register.
I am wholly unfamiliar with Lancashire. Are there online burial registers for this period? Lancashire will indexes?
There are parish record images for Liverpool and for Lancashire on Ancestry. Also Lancs OPC transcriptions - https://www.lan-opc.org.uk/
I don't have ancestors in Lancs, but have used this site before for wills pre 1858: https://user.xmission.com/~nelsonb/lws.htm
I don't know if there are others though.
Do you have an occupation for your John? I couldn't see an obvious burial for this man who appears in the wills index (I just assumed he had a seafaring occ given where he came from and where he ended up!):
Edwards John of Liverpool, pilot. 14 Aug 1818
The Liverpool burial index I looked at (St John's) had occupations listed in the abode column :)
I have several pilots in my tree and none of them made it to the burial register. Dangerous occupation.
I would have expected him to describe himself as yeoman or gentleman. I don't know why he went to Liverpool. It may have been to live, or just a trip.
Thanks for the links

shot in the dark - could Peternell have used the name Annabella - the only "Gentleman " I could find
Baptism: 23 Sep 1795 St Anne Richmond, Liverpool, Lancashire, England
Thomas Parker Edwards - Son of John Edwards, Esqre & Annabella, His Wife
Born: 29 Aug
or am I clutching at straws?
added - re Merrys post of John being a Pilot - it looks like his wife was Mary ?? unless there were 2 John Edwards - Pilot?
Baptism: 30 Sep 1796 St James, Toxteth, Lancashire, England
Hannah Edwards - daughter of John Edwards & Mary
Abode: Bridgewater Street
Occupation: Pilot
