Well what ever it is they have used it in all three entries.
For those women whose husbands were still alive it just had their name ie John Smoth, not that word as well. Of course it might be a title or something and the women who were widows were wealthier, or maybe poorer, than the married women who died.
Side note - I do think my woman was not poor, at least. There seems to be some money and the Adam family is apparently an old family, in a book I read.
Do you think it could be a possibly shortened form of this word umquhill?

Common Scots words occurring are umquhill = deceased , relict = widow, compeared = appeared before a court.
It could be Janet but would it have been necessary? She is the relict so that says he is dead.

It is umqll short for umquhill / umquhile, or however you like to spell it. I suppose they didn't mind a bit of redundancy in their records!
