Marion B Carrell was born on 20 Sep 1873 in Georiga, USA.

On 11 Dec 1893 he married Leona M Payne (b. 11 Jun 1875, d. 5 Jan 1937), daughter of Asa W Payne, in Jackson Co, Alabama, USA. Marion and John Carrell signed as witnesses.

On 23 Oct 1895, John R Carrell (b. Jul 1868) married Octavia Jane Payne (b. 7 Jun 1877, d. 24 Mar 1961), also the Daughter of Asa W Payne, in Jackson Co, Alabama.

There has been speculation that Marion B and John R were brothers and the sons of James A Carrell (b. Abt. 1833) of Paulding Co, Georgia. However, as I've been unable to find James A Carrell in the 1870 or 1880 U.S. Census records, I haven't been able to substantiate this assertion.

James A Carrell was in Paulding Co, Georgia during the census of 1850 living with his parents Benjamin and Doshy Carrell. As of the census of 1860, James A had married and had his first son in Haralson Co, Georgia (neighbor to Paulding Co). I have nothing for James A again until the 1900 census, which shows him as living with his wife and remaining children in Polk Co, Gerogia (bordering Haralson and Paulding counties).

During that gap, John R and Marion B were born, raised, and married.

I have not been able to tie either Marion B or John R to other families in the 1870 or 1880 census records. So, it is entirely possible that they are, in fact, the son's of James A. I just need documentation to support or refute it.

Any assistance the community could provide regarding this would be greatly appreciated.

Hello and welcome to the forum!

Are you saying that there were two Marion Carrells, one who married Leona Payne and one who witnessed their marriage, please? Or is that a mistake? If there were two then I would guess that one was probably the son of the other.

No, my understanding is that the groom and the Marion that signed are one in the same based on other marriage records in the same set.

Working from public ancestry trees (which I realise can be inaccurate), the children of this family seem to match the Carrells in names and ages:

All the children say born Georgia, parents both born Georgia, which doesn't fit with M L Hogan being their father. It looks as though a new household number was written in next to Julyann's name and then erased. So I would say it's probably the enumerator's mistake to have listed the children as Hogans.

If this is the correct family then I suppose "Morgan" would be Marion, and J R would be John.

If he's the same James A., the age is about right as he was age 15 on that census of 1850 living with his parents Benjamin and Doshy Carrell.

Also, is that the same Doshy, now spelled Dosie Carroll, listed as Mother on image 13 of 14, Line 9? She's with a Mary Mitchell, and next door on the same page starting on Line 1 is the family of Milton Carroll.

There are more Carrolls on image 5 and image 6, and on image 7 is a family of Carrolls starting line 20 with the wife named Julyann b. about 1840.

This looks to be that Hogan couple in 1870 and they have two children, Nancy 4 and William 2, confirming that the children on the 1880 census aren't theirs:

J A Carroll (47) m -- possibly James A

- Mary (13) f

If this is James A Carrell, John R (age 11-12) and Marion B (age 6-7) are not listed as children. Also, Frank F (b. 1864), who is supposedly another son of James A, is not listed. He would have been approximately 15-16 at the time of the census.

I found the children listed as Hogan (presumably by mistake) on this census - see post #4 of this thread.

Hi Kiterunner, I'm following up on this family now.

Note: An index, Alabama Deaths, 1908-1974, shows John R. Carrell's father as Jim Carrell. Jim is often a short form for James in the U.S.

Both John R. and Marion B. always reported their parents as being born in Georgia on Census records from 1900 on.

According to her death certificate, Catherine McAdams, daughter of Tom McAdams and Elizabeth Harris, was the spouse of M. L. Hogan. She passed away on 24 Jun 1925 in Fulton County, Georgia.

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find M L and Catherine Hogan in any other Census records so far to substantiate or refute the children listed in the 1880 as theirs.

UPDATE: I did find them Hogan family living in Fulton County, Georgia at the time of the 1900 Census. However, none of the children shown in previous census records were still living with them by this time.

Marcus Hogan (65) m
- Catherin (55) f
- Della (19) f
- Charles R (16) m
- Benjamin F (14) m
- Willie T (13) f

Based on the census records in 1870 and 1900, I agree that it appears the children listed as belonging to M L and Catherine Hogan in the 1880 census is incorrect.

However, I have not found sufficient evidence to support the children listed as being J B and Morgan Hogan as being John R and Marion B Carrell either.

I've been trying to find census and/or marriage records of the siblings listed to verify their surname. So far, I'm not finding anything showing these kids as being Carrell/Carrolls.

Note: There was a James Marion Carroll (b. 8 Sep 1874) in to William M and Elizabeth Carroll of Fulton County, Georgia.

This is a different Marion Carrell from the one I'm searching for.

Note: There was a Marion Carroll (b. 1869) in Cherokee County, Alabama (which borders Jackson County, Alabama where the Marion B I'm searching for married Leona Payne.

The Cherokee County Marion is also not the one I'm looking for based on later records.

Marion B Carrell was born on 20 Sep 1873 in Georiga, USA.

Ah, I've found the image of the marriage record now, and Marion and John didn't sign as witnesses to the marriage, but for the marriage license bond:
