There ARE Woolfords in Sussex.
James and Mary have children baptised there:

James 1811 Woolbeding
John 1814 Woolbeding
Mary 1816 Woolbeding
hannah 1819 Oving
Jane 1829 Stedham
and Henry, George, Thomas Wolford b Stedham

Given that the name is spelled Wo(o)lford in three different parishes, why can I only find Thomas - who stayed in Stedham - in the 1841/51/61 censuses?
Was there a plague?
Did the others all emigrate?
Help!

FamilySearch says George was buried 13 Dec 1823 at Stedham.

And James jr was buried 6 Jun 1822 at Stedham age 10.

Presumably Mary sr is the one who died Jul-Sep 1837 Midhurst district, age 50. Henry died Jul-Sep 1840 Midhurst district, age 16. There is also a William Woolford death Apr-Jun 1838 age 28 (though it could be 28 days as this is from the online GRO death index.)
Thanks, Elizabeth.
That might provve a clue. Henry was buriied in Heyshott - from Midhurst Union. So possibly they are under initials.

Hmm, FreeREG has Mary buried 7 Aug 1837 St James, Stedham, age 19! So the 1837 death could be either Mary sr or Mary jr, depending on who is right.
I am feeling decidely out of charity with Stedham's rector.
Jane, the youngest, was baptised in 1829. But the Rose's register was clearly no longer considered important. There is just a list of baptisms, and no note for Jane as to who officiated.
However, a James Woolford, aged 73, was buried in Nov 1828.
Was Jane postumous? Was this James her grandfather? Steam is coming out of my ears!
Thanks, Kite.

So freereg is clearly right. The only question is, was Collier, the rector, right?
For the record, this is James and Mary's marriage:

I suspect Mary was a Strotton, rather than a Stratton: Thomas Woolford married Emma Strotton: possibly a cousin.
As both James and Mary made their mark, I'm not convinced they would be accurate about their ages - but Mary could have died as 50 and been buried as 47, mis-copied as 17.
In fact, a Mary Strotton was baptised in Easebourne (where she married) in 1787, which would have made her exactly 50 at death. Hmm.
