He was buried in Foulsham in 1890 as Mears.

His children who have left home also appear to have changed name by 1871. But why?

Do you know if there's any overlap in the surname usage?

I saw granddaughter Charlotte Rebecca Rowe was registered such in Q1 1864. Is the marriage of Stephen Mears in 1867 Stephen Rowe from this family?

Are there any other entries for this family between 1864 and 1867?

There is a Charles Meers / Rebecca Rowe marriage 2 Jan 1823 at Edgefield. Could be connected?

I think now that Charles was the son of Rebecca Rowe before she married a Mears, which would explain the name change. Edgefield parish registers are not online, and there are gaps in the BTs, so Charles' baptism may not show.

It looks as if all the children changed name, so I suspect Stephen Mears is one of mine.

At work - so can't give as full an answer as I would like.

EDIT - Lol that's the wrong way round!! I posted it because I hadn't bothered to check first what I should have been looing for! :o

Exactly what I thought, Merry. Can't remember who the rector was then. She might have been calling herself Mills/Mears - they swallow their words in Norfolk - before he caught up with her.

The children baptised in Thornage were baptised as Mears.
And Charlotte Rebecca was baptised as Rowe alias Mears: https://www.ancestry.co.uk/interactive/61042/4033997_00464/2277025?backurl=http%3a%2f%2fsearch.ancestry.co.uk %2fcgi-bin%2fsse.dll%3fdbid%3d61042%26gsfn%3dcharles%26gs ln%3dmayers%26gsfn_x%3dNN%26gsln_x%3dNN%26cp%3d0%2 6msypn__ftp%3dnorfolk%252c%2bengland%26msypn%3d527 6%26msypn__ftp_x%3d1%26msypn_x%3d1%26pcat%3dbmd_bi rth%26qh%3dPCdwbiumkY%252fvUSnb%252b7moQQ%253d%253 d%26new%3d1%26rank%3d1%26redir%3dfalse&backlabel=ReturnSearchResults#?imageId=4011568_004 99

I don't know why I should be surprised over an ordinary illegitimacy:o Though I usually find that the vicar insists on the mother's surname, while the census doesn't care.

And of course Charlotte could marry under a third surname - if her mum ever married the father!

Well, Charlotte's mum Mary Ann and Samuel stuck to Rowe as a surname. Here they are in Willington Quay in 1871:
