Elizabeth Simpson, my 2g aunt who died aged 14 months in 1887.

Poor darling was so forgotten she didn't even make it to the 1911 census, where her parents said they had only 5 children all still living.:(

If she died in 1887, why would she have been considered still living in 1911?

Kit's not saying that,James :) The 1911 asks for wife to declare how many children were born from this marriage, how many are still living and how many died so she should have stated 6 born, 5 living and 1 died (at least). That's assuming Elizabeth of course was born to this marriage and not to a previous one.

I realize that (about census entries) but Toni said 'still living', which obviously a child who died in 1887 would not have been.

Seriously James??? I thought it was funny as I think Toni meant it to be too :)

Okay, went over my head I guess. Sorry.

Sorry, Elizabeth's parents only recorded that they had 5 children and they were all still living. They should have said 7 children, 5 living 2 dead. I've just found baby Joseph, my 2g uncle who died when only 4 days old.

I wasn't meaning to be funny, I wasn't clear.

I think it's sad that the 2 babies were not recorded at all.

Yes, it's sad. Unlike today, bereaved parents long ago didn't have scan images or photos to remember their children by.

I was upset when I found a branch of my ex's family on 1911 census. I was puzzled as there were several children called Annie and several others all called Albert, with ages that didn't make sense (not enough time between pregnancies), till the genealogist at the National Archives pointed out they had recorded all their children and the ages at which they had died. Not my family, not even closely related to my ex, but I did find it really sad. At least they did get recorded!

That is sad Nell, but lovely that they are remembered.

I find it hard when children died young, and also Mother's that died during or just after giving birth. I know it was common but I find it heart breaking.
