NickiP very kindly sent me a copy of the will of Roger Barker, 1772, who was Rector of Castle Camps, Cambridgeshire.

One puzzle has arisen from the will:

"I Give to my Niece Sarah Dennett the Folio Bible late Hooton’s and after her decease to her daughter Sarah Dennett".

Initially, I need to investigate nieces in the strict sense of the word - i.e. daughters of his brothers and sisters.

Roger Barker had nine brothers and sisters.

1. James was Vicar of Woodmancote, Sussex and had eight children, but no child called Sarah.

2. Thomas died as a small child.

3. Martha, baptised 1697, was still single in 1736 when her father died. I doubt she had children.

4. Sarah married Charles Sweeting in 1720. He died in 1731 and they appear to have had no children. Sarah went to live with her brother Roger at Castle Camps.

5. David is rather a mystery. Baptised in 1699. I have found a burial I think could be his - 26 June 1745 at Sompting, Sussex.

6. Williams Barker - Reverend. Lived at West Stoke, Sussex. Died 1764. He had a daughter Sarah born 1745.

7. Peter - born 1703. He isn't mentioned in his father's will so probably dead before 1736. I know nothing more about him.

8. Cecilia - born 1704. Dead by 1736. I know nothing more about her.

9. Margaret - my 6x-great-grandmother. She married John Andrew at Cocking, Sussex, where they had eleven children. They had a daughter Sarah born in 1731. I don't know what happened to her.

I have found some baptisms in Sussex for the correct time period for a couple called Thomas and Sarah Dennett. I haven't found a marriage.

One daughter was called Mary Sweeting Dennit and was baptised 14 Oct 1762 at Lewes. Sweeting was the surname of Roger Barker's sister Sarah.

John 12 December 1760 Lewes
Frances 27 September 1764 Lewes

Sarah 4 October 1756 Steyning
Thomas 18 December 1758 Steyning

I really need to find the marriage between Thomas Dennett and a Sarah - probably Barker or Andrew.

Sarah Andrew daughter of John and Margaret Andrew looks the most likely candidate so far. As she was baptised in 1731, a child born in 1756 would be about right if she married in her early 20s.

Bother, John Andrew, father of Sarah, made his will on 5th June 1763 and it appears that she was still single.

Jill, thanks for that marriage. One little part of the puzzle solved.
It's not easy to find Sussex marriages.

Perhaps Charles and Sarah Sweeting had a child after all, but I never found one.

There seem to be a lot of Dennetts in Sussex! There are some trees on ancestry which have the mother of that 1758 Thomas as Sarah Clare, but they look extremely dodgy.

Yes, Kate, I haven't got anywhere with this. A couple of the siblings that died before their father could have married and had children first.

The Sweeting name in the mix is a tease, though. There must be a connection.
