I am a bit stuck with the Sheards all who married at Ormskirk, Lancs and am not sure if I am just being muddled headed or what!!

I used to find that Lancashire records were great to find, but these are not obliging.

In 1876 I presume that the sisters had a double wedding, Emma Sheard married Halbert Shennan Ferguson and Ada Rebecca Sheard married William Bennett. (Halbert was baptised in a Wesleyan chapel, so not sure if they were married Non-Com.)

In 1879 Caroline Ruth Sheard married William Watson and I cannot find it either.;(

Then in 1895 James Frederic Sheard married Edith Alice Sandbach.:(

Then I have one who married according to the 1901 Census but not sure where. Herbert William Sheard, somewhere between the 1881 census and 1896, married Delgracia from USA. He died in 1916 and she applied for a passport in her married name and said was born 22 June 1860 in Ottawa, Illinois, USA. Some people said her actual name was Grace Strawn .. Not sure what name she would have used for their marriage..

Help would be greatly appreciated. Julie

Lancashire BMD is a good place to look as it gives you the name of the church, if applicable, or "Register Office or Registrar Attended", which is what comes up for Ada and Emma's weddings in 1876. This means that they married either at the register office or a non-conformist church.

And the same for Caroline's marriage in 1879 and James's in 1895.

I was going to paste the entries here, but my laptop doesn't want to play! The first two were both registrar attended or at the reg office, so could well be non con. Have a look for the others here:

Is that "he was born..." supposed to be "she", Julie? The 1901 census has him born Southport Lancs and her born United States.

Ancestry has this entry in the Florida Death Index: Delgracia Strawn Sheard, Feb 1959, Duval, Florida.

And the passenger list showing Delgracia Sheard's arrival at Key West, Florida, from Cuba, 16 Feb 1929, says she was born at Ottawa Ill 22 Jun 1869, which fits with her age on the 1901 census:

Many thanks ladies, at least I wasn't overlooking obvious records for the Ormskirk marriages.

The American records are great thanks Kate. I wonder what a Lancashire lad was doing in the States! I must see if I can find him on the 1891 Census. I think I had him in the 81. His estate was worth over 10,000 pounds in 1916, so he had obviously made money.

Thanks again. Julie
