1851 census
Benjamin Brooks b 1786 Bagley ,Salop
Elizabeth Brooks b 1785 Preston Gubbals ,Salop
can't find a marriage
there are 2 christenings for Elizabeth in 1786 ( a year out )
Elizabeth Morris 11th August - Thomas and Eleanor
Elizabeth Beddoe 26th Sept - John and Margaret

I am favouring Thomas and Eleanor because Benjamin and Elizabeths 1st born that I can find is Thomas Brooks 11th sept 1813 so maybe named after granddad ?
why can't I find a marriage for them ?..what am I doing wrong ?
ADDED these are my Direct 4 X G Grandparents ... love the name Preston Gubbals...lol

According to the transcription on FamilySearch, the baptism of John Brooks 14 Feb 1819 at the Independent Chapel in Hadnall, Shropshire, gives parents' names as Benjamin Brooks and Elizabeth Bailey. And the same for Benjamin Brooks 21 Oct 1815. And George Brooks 3 Sep 1826.

There's a marriage in 1805 in Preston Gubbalds between Benjamin BROOKES & Elizabeth NEWNS.

Hmm, Findmypast has a Benjamin Brookes / Elizabeth Newns marriage in 1805 at Preston Gubbalds. I haven't got a sub to view the image.
Edit - I see Oakum Picker got there first!

Could just be a coincidence, but there is a Thomas Newns / Elizabeth Bailey marriage in 1803 at St Mary's, Shrewsbury.
Edit - I've looked at the map, and Preston Gubbals is pretty close to Shrewsbury.

FMP has three Anglican baptisms at Hadnall for children of Benjamin Brooks and Elizabeth:
Samuel 1808, Elizabeth 1811 and Thomas 1813. Again, I haven't got a sub to view the images so I don't know what additional info there is.

Thomas NEWNS married Elizabeth BAILEY in 1803 so I think the above is the correct marriage. Ben & Liz have a child in PG in 1806 , then a couple in the parish church, name forgotten before becoming non-con.

So ..I make it 9 children - some say Independent Chapel ,Hadnall / some say Hadnall and Clive - and some have BOTH - so it looks to me like they had 9 children - I can find 8 baptisms - but Marthas is missing but she is with the family in 1851 census ?

for the record - My g grandmother was 96 when she died and I was 9 - she was born in 1865 in Astley - very close to Preston Gubbalds ...she was a beautiful writer and in her memoirs it is Prestone GOBALDS - and in Parish records it is spelt Gobalds from 1600's - there are records for it ...
added- I said 1600's - it is 1560 -
quote - Prestone Gobalds (Baptisms) 1560-1812

I have been to Astley several times - but I HAVE to go to Preston Gubbalds this summer for a sunday drive ...thanks again girls ...xxx

Here is Sarah's baptism on ancestry and it confirms that MMN was Bailey:

Benjamin jr and Thomas are on the same page.

Martha is 17 on the 1851 census so born about 1833. Elizabeth is 66 on that census.
And on the 1841 census they are 7 and 55 respectively.

Finally thought of searching the Anglican baptisms for Martha instead of the non-conformist ones! Martha Brookes baptised 22 Sep 1833 Hadnall, daughter of Sarah Brookes. The image is on FMP if you have a sub to view it. I did think she was unlikely to be Benjamin and Elizabeth's daughter.
