Matthew Sheard married Ruth Spivey by licence 6/6/1805 at Kirkheaton, Yorkshire – witnesses John Mallinson and George Marsden.

Help would be really appreciated with positively identifying Matthew: I am not sure what is obvious or what I am missing. I cannot positively find him in the Census; I have a possible death and a probable birth as follows:

1. I think he is the 6th child of 10 children of Michael Sheard and Elizabeth Mallinson m 1764 Kirkheaton. Matthew and Ruth’s 1st child is named John Mallinson Sheard, who is also the name of a witness at their marriage. I don’t know whether there is a family connection between the two Mallinsons.

2. In the 1841 Census: I have found Ruth the mother, with Ruth, Sarah and Jane; Michael is nearby with Eleanor; Benjamin and James are together; I think I have found Matthew at school in Huddersfield. Hannah and Elizabeth are married. I have not positively Id John Mallinson Sheard in the 1841. I found a 60 yr old farmer at Kirkburton near Tanyard House called Matthew, but I am not sure how to know his identity.

3. I have checked the marriages of the children for information on their father:
Hannah 1829 requires consent of surrogate.
Michael 1834 no information
Elizabeth 1837 no information
Benjamin Spivey 1840 – Fr Matthew grocer
James 1844 – Fr Matthew corn merchant
Jane 1851 – Fr Matthew deceased
Matthew 1851 – Fr Matthew deceased
Eleanor 1852 – bad image can’t read
Sarah 1862 – Fr Matthew grocer

4. I have found a possible death and burial – Matthew Sheard buried St Mary, Illingworth 7/2/1850. 72 years. Reg. Halifax.

5. In the 1851 Census, Ruth states that she is married and is a visitor with her son James and family, who are living not far from Kirkheaton, at Dalton. He is a corn factor employing 10 men and occupier of 40 acres employing 2 men. (In the 1841 James is unmarried and living at Huddersfield with his older brother Benjamin who too is a grocer.)

Matthew and Ruth’s 14 children, born 1806 and 1829 at Kirkheaton (Heaton.) Matthew grocer.

Findmypast has entries in the "Prerogative & Exchequer Courts of York Probate Index" and the "Index to Death Duty Registers" for Matthew Sheard 1850, but I don't have a sub to view the entries. There is also a Matthew Sheard listed in those databases for 1837, location given as Kirkheaton. The National Burial Index and "Yorkshire Burials" also on FMP have the 1837 burial as Kirkheaton, age 56. So maybe that one could be your Matthew? Or have you already ruled that one out?

Many thanks Kate and Jay .. that is brilliant. :D:D
I think what was niggling me was that in the 1861 Census Ruth was down as married not widowed ....
Saying that Elizabeth was daughter of the late Matthew in April 1837 is the proof I needed a perfect fit for the Matthew who died in the January. Yipee.:o

I am now working backwards from what I know for sure (hopefully) - Matthew Sheard married Ruth Spivey by licence, 6 June 1805 at Kirkheaton, Yorks, witnesses John Mallinson and George Marsden.

Their oldest child of 14, was John Mallinson Sheard, born 1806 Heaton, another son, Benjamin Spivey Sheard, born 1815, which ties in female lines.

Matthew Sheard, died Jan 1837 at Kirkheaton, aged 56 yrs, (many thanks to GF) this ties with a baptism at Kirkheaton of Matthew Sheard son of Michael 30 April 1780.
In the very poor image for Matthew's brother Michael's baptism 19 Jul 1778, it looks like Fr. Michael, Clothier, Lept.

Michael Sheard had married Elizabeth Mallinson at Kirkheaton 20 Sep 1764.

Children baptised at Kirkheaton:
Ann Jan 1765 Lepton (poor name) m John Clapham 7/6/1783 KH bride 19

Michael 19 Jul 1778 Lepton - 4 Oct 1778 Cowms, Lepton
Matthew 30 April 1780 Lepton married Ruth Spivey 1805 as above
Elizabeth 15 Aug 1782 Lepton – 14 Dec 1782 Cowms, Lepton
Isaac 22 Feb 1784 Cowms, Lepton - buried 1 Oct 1786 Kirkheaton. Fr. Michael Lepton
Peter 1 Oct 1786 Lepton twin - buried 14 Jan 1787 Kirkheaton Fr Michael Lepton
James 1 Oct 1786 Lepton twin (not 1 Feb 1787, son of Michael of Dalton). There are marriages for James Sheard but nothing identifying him.

Michael Sheard who married Elizabeth Mallinson 1764,
son of Michael, Lepton, baptised Kirkheaton 11 Mar 1740*
probable burial 22 Jul 1788 Kirkheaton.
Land Tax Lepton 1793 Proprietor John Mallinson Occupier Widow Sheard.
Land Tax Lepton 1795 Proprietor John Mallinson Occupier Elizabeth Sheard.
Elizabeth Sheard Burial Kirkheaton 5 March 1806 widow of Michael.
(I am thinking as Elizabeth was left with six children to rear, that either her father, or brother, John Mallinson provided her with a cottage).
I am wondering if there is a Mallinson will that may name children!! Unfortunately Abel, John and William were fathers to Elizabeth Mallinson in the 1740s in Kirkheaton.

Children of Michael Sheard baptised at Kirkheaton: all images note from Heaton.
Elizabeth 17 April 1735 - possible marriage John Horsfall (Coplyhill) 16/6/1755 Kirkheaton.
Hannah 26 March 1737 – 9 Nov 1737.
John 22 Nov 1738 - married Sarah Noble aka Nobles 12/6/1768 Kirkheaton. Witness John Mallinson.

Thomas 6 Jan 1745 possible (Thomas of Thornhill) marriage Sarah Smith 25/8/1768 Kirkheaton. Witness Richard Beaumont.
Richard 14 Dec 1749 – 21 Feb 1750.

I am struggling with the marriage of Michael Sheard Senior.
There are marriages in Birstall, but also children being born in Birstall.
The mother’s name not being on the children’s baptism, makes it very difficult to identify families.
Any help would be much appreciated. Kirkheaton marriages are on FMP for which I don't have a sub at the moment.

Burial - Kirkheaton 25 Feb 1778 for Michael Sheard (poor image) Hole Bottom? Lepton of jaundice.
