Matthew Sheard married Ruth Spivey by licence 6/6/1805 at Kirkheaton, Yorkshire – witnesses John Mallinson and George Marsden.
Help would be really appreciated with positively identifying Matthew: I am not sure what is obvious or what I am missing. I cannot positively find him in the Census; I have a possible death and a probable birth as follows:
1. I think he is the 6th child of 10 children of Michael Sheard and Elizabeth Mallinson m 1764 Kirkheaton. Matthew and Ruth’s 1st child is named John Mallinson Sheard, who is also the name of a witness at their marriage. I don’t know whether there is a family connection between the two Mallinsons.
2. In the 1841 Census: I have found Ruth the mother, with Ruth, Sarah and Jane; Michael is nearby with Eleanor; Benjamin and James are together; I think I have found Matthew at school in Huddersfield. Hannah and Elizabeth are married. I have not positively Id John Mallinson Sheard in the 1841. I found a 60 yr old farmer at Kirkburton near Tanyard House called Matthew, but I am not sure how to know his identity.
3. I have checked the marriages of the children for information on their father:
Hannah 1829 requires consent of surrogate.
Michael 1834 no information
Elizabeth 1837 no information
Benjamin Spivey 1840 – Fr Matthew grocer
James 1844 – Fr Matthew corn merchant
Jane 1851 – Fr Matthew deceased
Matthew 1851 – Fr Matthew deceased
Eleanor 1852 – bad image can’t read
Sarah 1862 – Fr Matthew grocer
4. I have found a possible death and burial – Matthew Sheard buried St Mary, Illingworth 7/2/1850. 72 years. Reg. Halifax.
5. In the 1851 Census, Ruth states that she is married and is a visitor with her son James and family, who are living not far from Kirkheaton, at Dalton. He is a corn factor employing 10 men and occupier of 40 acres employing 2 men. (In the 1841 James is unmarried and living at Huddersfield with his older brother Benjamin who too is a grocer.)
