I have found the administration of Roger Williams of Northampton. I knew he had died in 1669 as I have his burial.

After Prudence W.'s name are the abbreviations "rel. ren.". I assume that "rel. is for relative. Any ideas about ren.?

I imagine it is one of the administrators renouncing their right to administer. So presumably the son or brother took on a task too onerous for the widow.

Thanks, Phoenix. I had Roger Williams married to Martha for the birth of the children, but she died in 1659 so I need to look for a second wife.

I need a trip to Kew as both I now have two PCC administrations to view - this one, and John's from 1708.

I would have thought that rel was short for relict.

Yes, I realise that now.
It threw me as I didn't know his wife was Prudence.
There are two granddaughters with the name.

I have to be very careful that the burial and administration belong to my John's father, but there don't appear to be any other Roger Williams around at that time.

Very interesting.

A Roger Williams married Prudence Ruddock on 29th April 1663 at St Benet Pauls Wharf, London.

His son John was vicar at St Peter, St Paul's Wharf at this time and some of his children were baptised and buried here.

The register doesn't indicate that Roger Williams was a widower, but it seems a huge coincidence.

Another connection - I think I have proof that Roger Williams was John's father:

Prudence Williams was buried at St Benet & St Peter, Paul's Wharf on 4th October 1674.
