Can I search for a marriage on the GRO Index?

If you mean on the indexes actually on the GRO website then, no, they only have indexes for certain years of births and deaths. What are you looking for?

I’m looking for a marriage between William Asquith and Elizabeth Wood. First child born 1857. They are both Bradford, Wakefield, Yorkshire area.
Only got the Wood name from first son, Amos Asquith. There is a possible Elizabeth Wood on 1851 census, father is Job.

It’s rsally the marriage holding us back. I am absolutely useless with Ancestry even though I have a world sub. Have tried FreeBMD as well.

Did not realise Asquith was so common.

The online GRO birth index also has an unnamed Asquith / Wood girl Oct-Dec 1854 Wakefield.

There is a William Ackroyd / Elizabeth Wood marriage Apr-Jun 1854 Wakefield on FreeBMD. I can't find it anywhere else to check.

Didn’t know about the girl. Thanks. I’ll check to rule out the Ackroyd one. Thanks.

I think that might be this one?
Elizabeth Wood age 19 to William Ackworth age 21
26 June 1854
St James, Thorne, Wakefield
I cannot see this on FreeBMD

That would be about right, apart from the name. Dinner time here, which I have to cook as well as eat, but will try to find that couple to rule them out.

This is the marriage that Katarzyna found:

He is a miner, of Newton, father John Ackworth, a miner, and she is of Thornesham(?), father William Wood, a shoe maker.

Well that’s just not fair! Thanks for saving my sanity searching though.

Does that rule them out as your couple, then, Libby?

All I know about Elizabeth is she is the mother of William Asquith’s children, and men on GRO is Wood.

William is definitely Asquith. But........from the most likely census in 1851, his father is John and they are at Newton. William born Cherwell. He is a miner but so are half the men in the area. It just might be the right ones.
