A recent newspaper find, by a friend, of a report on my gg uncle Robert Barley during the first world war has led me to looking at his family (one of my favourites) even further. I managed to find his wife, who was mentioned in the article and also a son, who sadly died shortly after birth and have been tracing his siblings.
His brother Fred (c1875) was in Great Yarmouth in 1911, aboard the SS Salvor. making use of Ancestry's free weekend, I have seen that it clearly says he was married 9 years with 2 surviving children. I found a marriage in Sculcoates in 1906 to either Mary Ellen Haworth or Ellen Bullock but can find no trace of the wife and children in 1911. I know this marriage is a few years short of the 9 years he claims but his father claimed to have been married 48 years in 1911, when he had actually only been married for 3!

Can anyone trace Mrs Barley and their children please?

Yorkshire BMD shows that the 1906 marriage was to Mary E Haworth at St Philips, Bilton Grange. But I can't find any Barley / Haworth births between 1906 and 1911 on the online GRO birth index.

This must be Mary and the children in 1911:

10 Victoria Ter, Drypool
Mary E Barley Wife 32 Married 5 years, 2 children, 2 living - crossed out and replaced with none for both Blackburn Lancs
Catherine J Howarth Stepdaughter crossed out and replaced with daughter, 12, school, Bradford Yorkshire
Albert Howarth Stepson crossed out and replaced with son, 11, school, Bradford Yorkshire.

Although "wife" hasn't been crossed out and replaced with "head", I guess that the stepdaughter / daughter, stepson / son change was made to fit with Mary being head instead of Fred.

Perhaps he was away at sea. I have several families like this, where the wife and family are at home and husband can be assumed to be at sea.

That's great Kate, thanks. If the children weren't Fred's, no wonder I couldn't find them.

I haven't managed to find them in 1901 though or a birth for them. Fred was at home with his parents in Barton upon Humber in 1901

Okay, there is a Mary Ellen Diggle birth Jul-Sep 1878 Blackburn with MMN Haworth. But I haven't found a marriage to George Ellis yet.

Why would she marry Fred, using the name of Haworth, if that was only her mother's maiden name, unless she was still married to George Ellis?
Very strange

I was thinking that if Ellen was still alive in 1901, George and Mary wouldn't have been able to marry each other. But I haven't managed to figure out what happened to Ellen yet!

As well as the birth reg for Catherine J Ellis there is this one:

ELLIS, HANNAH mmn DIGGLE
GRO Reference: 1902 D Quarter in BRADFORD Volume 09B Page 46

who most likely died in 1903 Q2 and was not included in the original figures for the 1911 census for Mary E Barley.

Very interesting, if Hannah was Mary Ellen's daughter then why did she say she had only had 2 children in 1911? Her using her mother's maiden name for her children in 1911 is also very odd, maybe she was hiding from George? An interesting problem, although I am only really concerned about Fred, who was my relative. Thanks for the help
