2 versions ~ can change the colours very easily ~ just say
I can't tell if there should be a corresponding lacy piece of 'collar' the other side  (her left)

:D Hi Jenny
I was hoping you'd do a version ~ that collar bit makes more sense now but still confuses me ~ woke up thinking about it in the night ! :( and was planning to give it a twiddle later :)
OK two revised versions ~ and still thinking ;( :)

Ladies, what can i say, you have all done such beautiful work on my photo.
I am so pleased with them all, sooooo clever, thank you for the time you put in, xxx
lol Rachel! I didn't study your first one until after I posted mine and realised that was a piece of lace over her right shoulder as you correctly interpreted in your first colour!
I've done a few colourisations for this era and noticed the fashion was not to be symetrical
Jenny
Oh rats Jenny ! :d
It's certainly confusing and it 'kind of' looks as if there's something on her left  but that sharp fold is a puzzle
Am trying to walk away from it (not very successfully) but would like to do some different colours and another tweak or two (unhappy with her skirt) but you know what it's like ~ the thread could go on forever !
I don't know whether I should be sticking my nose in here ;(, but was just wondering......do you think it's possible the upper bodice area is just the same fabric as the main part of her dress, but made up with the reverse side of the fabric to the front? Like a satin type fabric one side and matt the other - ? To me the upper part of the collar looks the same depth of colour as the upper part of the bodice.
Having said all that, I've not zoomed in on the picture, so might be quite wrong!
;( Zoomifications !
Is that a pattern on her skirt ?
Does the whole outfit have a flowery pattern ? :(
I took it that the upper part of her collar and her cuffs are the same material
they have a slight sheen (I think)

IMHO I think that is a flaw on the original photo!
Excellent zoomifications though!!
Mmmmmm ~ very difficult to tell and the more you stare at it the more flowery stuff you can see ! ;( :D
Here's a quickie to give an idea of patterned fabric
http://i121.photobucket.com/albums/o228/rachelscand/MoGranagepatternweb.jpg
Merry ~ do you mean more like this ? somehow ?

I like post 28 the best so far, because the contrast between the lacy bit and the rest of the dress is less marked. Not sure about the patterned fabric though.
Doesn't the white bit go all the way down to her waist, in a V shape?

:) Yes the colours work nicely but being aesthetically pleasing is not necessarily the way to go with restoration and when faced with the ambiguous (is that the word I need ?) then one has to make a decision.
There is always the dilemma ~ do we just go with what we can see, however bad it is, or try to resolve the mess
It's the same with colourising ~ the Victorians in particular often used odd combinations so all we can do is look at the tones and make an educated guess.
Colours and tones can be changed very easily so I guess it's really up to the owner of the photo to say what they fancy ~ but it's GREAT fun to play with colour combinations

Impossible to tell what's happening ~ all we can do is speculate and discuss
To everyone that has worked on my photo, thank you so much, i've saved them to show my family, i love them all, just having this photo of my gran when she was so young means an awful lot to me, its a shame a lot of people didnt look after their old photographs.
I am amazed how much the photograph alters with each different colour, in my eyes anyway lol.
Once again, thanks to everyone xxx
