I really do hate that term and the others ie illegitimate, bastard etc but it is sort of useful this time.

I have a marriage and the minister wrote a note saying the husband was base born and the father was Eames, the mother Shore. He married as William Shore Eames. Would he always have been an Eames? I haven't searched properly for his baptism yet, just wondering if I should be looking for Mum or Dad's surname?

Different illegitimate child but is it common to re-baptise a child if the mother marries? I have no idea if she married the father but would there be another baptism using the husband's surname?

I don't think there would be another baptism as baptism usually doesn't involve the surname. I have married women baptised in their maiden names. It's really just the Christian name.

Children are registered a second time if the mother marries the father after the child's birth.

This is before registration.

It looks like Mum had an illegitimate daughter called Anna, marries 2 years later and then a year after that baptises 2 girls called Anna and Mary Ann.

I can't find a burial though. I'll keep looking.

Looks like we have a name change here - baptised 1794 as William Eames Shore, mother Jone Shore. Married as William Shore Eames.

I'm yet to find Dad but I'm guessing William did to change his name.

Is that William SE (widower) remarrying in 1841 (after the census lol) to Lavinia Hill? I can't find her in 1851 and she may have died in 1856 (aged 37). I was thinking to try and pick up William's birthplace/age from the census, but maybe you already know it!

I don't think you can say which name you should be looking for - I would say both! lol

Hmmmm...... I think this is Lavinia in 1851 but William isn't there, so not much help!

I forgot to say, on the 1841 marriage the father of the groom is given as William Eames.

I wondered if this is William in 1851:

If it is, I can't see a suitable bap at Ilton.

Perhaps that William I saw in 1851 isn't the one and Lavinia's husband was much older as I just saw this bap:

William Eames Shore Baptism 15 Jun 1794 Ilton mother Jone

I suppose the lodger William could have the wrong age on the census, or knocked off ten years to marry Lavinia?!! (if the census chap married in 1823 he would have been pretty young if really born in 1805ish )

Wow Merry, you have done well.

Yes I believe William was born in Ilton to Jone Shore. She conveniently married a Mr Smith, but I haven't looked into that at all yet.

I haven't been able to kill off Jane, William's first wife although I have seen the marriage to Lavinia Hill nor find William or Lavinia on a census so I will be having a good look at what you found.

I've seen that William names his father as William but I don't know if that is real or just making up a name. I do think I found a marriage for a William Eames either in Ilton or Whitelackington but I didn't follow it up, not knowing if it was to do with my tree.

William and Jane had a son William born abt 1825, not sure that helps anything.

Back to William on the 1851 census, I agree the age could be wrong and I can't read the occupation which isn't helping. Jane, the first wife, was baptised in 1803 so maybe William did knock a few years off the marry Lavinia. The parish register for the marriage isn't online, that I can find.

The 1851 census occ for William is Journeyman Tanner.

Thanks Merry.

I'm looking at other extended family to see if that helps.

I haven't been able to kill off Jane

No, me neither. The last sighting of her I saw was on the bap of a son, Charles, in 1831 at Whitelackington (son died the same year).

EDIT: found her burial - def her. Nasty vicar just can't help himself, can he?!

Thanks Merry. Clearly the vicars at Whitelackington hold a grudge as the one who married them and the one who buried Jane are different people.

I just wish the nasty vicar would mention Dad's name. I know William calls him William but I don't know if that is just convenience or not. Then again the vicars knows the story so it might be right.

I have a poor chap in my tree who is listed as "grandson" to the head of the household in the census and his occupation given as "bastard".

But in another branch of the family, a few censuses on, another grandchild is listed as "love child".

I have a weakness for the snide comments of officials on documents.

One of my favourites is the comment next to "wife" on census. The enumerator has written "she says" in the margin, lol.

My great great grandmother, who was living apart from her husband, is head of the house, with several children, and the male in the house is listed as consort. They did spend the rest of their lives together but I have never found a marriage.
