View Full Version : Fanny Berkin
Fanny Berkin/Burkin was born 3 July 1896. mmn Barnett. in Mile End.
Her brother Benjamin was born 1894 in Whitechapel.
Their mother died and their father Morris Berkin remarried after the 1901 census.
I assume they were in the East End in 1901, but cannot find the family. Morris was a cap-maker, born 1873 per his naturalisation papers

Alec and Annie were children of Morris's second marriage, to Sarah.
Can anyone find the first family in 1901?
Could it be this (https://www.ancestry.co.uk/interactive/7814/LNDRG13_301_303-0692?pid=17608651&backurl=https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv%3D1%26db%3Duki1901%26gss%3Dangs-d%26new%3D1%26rank%3D1%26gsfn%3DFanny%26gsfn_x%3D0 %26gsln%3DBe*n%26gsln_x%3D0%26msbpn__ftp%3DMile%2B End%2BOld%2BTown%252c%2BLondon%252c%2BEngland%26ms bpn%3D85567%26msbpn_PInfo%3D8-%257c0%257c0%257c3257%257c3251%257c0%257c0%257c0%2 57c5274%257c85567%257c0%257c0%257c%26msfng%3DMorri s%26_F0007AD6%3DWhitechapel%26MSAV%3D1%26uidh%3Dyk e%26pcat%3D35%26fh%3D7%26h%3D17608651%26recoff%3D% 26ml_rpos%3D8%26hovR%3D1&treeid=&personid=&hintid=&usePUB=true&usePUBJs=true), Phoenix?
I've looked at that, James, but Fanny and her brother have birth certificates in this country as Burkin/Berkin. Unfortunately, the naturalisation certificate gives no suggestions for other spellings of the name.
Yes, it does look like Morris has chosen English (or perhaps Jewish) names for himself and his children; it's very unlikely he was born with that name, and so tracing him prior to his naturalization may be difficult.
I'll keep looking, though!
A possibility (https://www.ancestry.co.uk/interactive/7814/LNDRG13_304_306-0627/17759115?backurl=http%3a%2f%2fsearch.ancestry.co.u k%2fcgi-bin%2fsse.dll%3fdb%3duki1901%26gss%3dsfs28_ms_r_db %26new%3d1%26rank%3d1%26gsln%3dB*rkin%26gsln_x%3d0 %26msbdy%3d1873%26msbpn__ftp%3dRussia%2520%26msbpn %3d5189%26msbpn_PInfo%3d3-%257C0%257C1652396%257C0%257C5189%257C0%257C0%257C 0%257C0%257C0%257C0%257C0%257C%26mscng%3dBenjamin% 26mscng1%3dFanny%26gskw%3dcap%2520maker%26_F0007AD 6%3dWhitechapel%26_F0007AD6_x%3d1%26_83004003-n_xcl%3df%26MSAV%3d1%26uidh%3dyke&backlabel=ReturnSearchResults) for Morris (Gootmann) and Sarah in 1901, with a daughter named Rebecca.
Have you managed to trace any other births to the couple?
Morris says 4 children, no deaths. I can't see anyhting on the GRO index - and thought that Sarah was mother to all of them.
That ref you found is the same street as the family were in a decade later, so promising, but I'd expect Benjamin to be there too.
Do the two UK births you've found have baptisms?

Not sure who the child is.
They are Jewish, in a Jewish community, so I'd say unlikely.

Haha, what a stupid question! I even said they were Jewish a few posts ago. :o
Looks like they may have been in America for the 1901 census

Ha, Merry to the rescue as ever. I don't know why I bother. :D
You've been really helpful, James, helping to pinpoint an area.
Thank you, Merry. It looks like I'll need to buy Fanny's cert - to find out who her mother was. Presumably she died in America.
With my luck, they went out early in 1901 and missed both censuses.
This has to be Fanny's uncle: up north, but a cap maker!

Her first name was Julia, so Julia Barnett:

They should be in the UK in 1901 as that passenger list is Nov 1901!

This looks like them in 1901 but father's name is Jacob:

I don't know whether James already posted this one? But now we know the mother's name is Julia, it fits.
Wow, thank you both! Weird he is down as Jacob, when that is his brother's name, aka Jack.

Jack is another form of John, not James or Jacob -- or at least I've always known it as such.
What was the name you were looking for, that turned out to be Jacob?
