Hi,
I am trying to find out some more about Millbrow Dabbs.

I have her marriage entry, and know she was born in Wellington, Shropshire in 1788.
Died January 1877.

She married Reuben Owen in 1810 in Wellington. Both signed with an X.

I have been unable to find a birth for Millbrow. However, at their son's wedding, the witnesses were Richard Williams and Ellen Dabbs, who then married each other in 1842. Her Father is given as Edward Dabbs and her age as "Full Age". Age given as 20 on the 1841.

At the time of the 1841 census, Millbrow and Reuben have Eleanor Dabbs living with them as a Female Servant.

I was hoping that finding out about Ellen/Eleanor and Edward might lead to Millbrow, but I'm not having much success.

Any ideas?!

Thanks!

Name found on various records as: Milbrow, Milbbro', Milbrow, Milbro, Millimore, Milborow, Milbrain, Milbram, Millbra, Milbram.

Note: Haven't found her in 1851 yet.

Have been trying to follow up Eliza Jones (born c1827 Shrewsbury, Shropshire) who is with Millbrow in 1861 (Servant) and 1871 (Cousin), but no luck yet.

Also trying to follow up William Dabbs (Widower, aged 72), who is Lodging with Millbrow in 1871, but again, not much luck.

This looks like Millbrow (shown as Amelia) and Reuben in 1851, with daughter Eliza and Eliza Jones, living next door to a Dabbs family:

Yes, I remember seeing that one now! Thanks Mary!

Briscoe family next door too... Millbrow's son John married a Briscoe.

There is a Millbrown in a previous generation, wife of William Dabbs, with a son "Fraines" (according to FamilySearch) baptised 3 Apr 1774, and daughter Elinor baptised 26 Dec 1771. Then she is listed as Milbraham, as mother of Oliver baptised 23 Jul 1780, and Emilia, mother of Jarvis baptised 3 May 1778. I'm guessing she (and your Millbrow) was known as Milly!

There are a lot of Dabbses in Wellington.

It looks as though the name originates from St Milburgh, who was very popular in Shropshire.

FMP has the burial of an Edward Dabbs 28 Jul 1824 at Wellington All Saints, age 62, abode Street Lane. He doesn't come up on the Index to Death Duty Registers so I suppose there is no will.

Ah, Edward Dabs was baptised 31 Jul 1763 at Wellington All Saints, the son of William and Millbrough. So maybe your Millbrow was a daughter of this Edward? I'm having no luck finding baptisms for any children with father's name Edward Dabs or Dabbs at the moment.

FamilySearch has some children of Edward Dabbs and Bell / Bella baptised at Welllington:

Hannah 22 Aug 1802
Adam 13 May 1804
Mary 31 May 1807
Rachael 17 Feb 1809
Michael 15 May 1811
James 14 Apr 1813.

Then there is an Eleanor Davies baptised 5 Apr 1820 at Wellington All Saints, daughter of Edward and Bell. This is the link to the image on FMP and the abode is Street Lane, which fits with the Edward Dabbs burial in post #8. Occupation is labourer.

I've looked at the 1813 James Dabbs baptism and that is also All Saints, and abode is St Lane, occupation Limeman.

FMP also comes up with Catharine baptised 14 Apr 1805 and Martha 1 May 1816 (transcribed as Dobbs.) Abode for Martha is Street Lane, occupation Lime Man.

FMP has an Edward Dobbs / Bell Hendry marriage 12 Jan 1797 at Dalkeith, Midlothian, Scotland. I was going to ignore it but then I seemed to remember I saw a female Dabbs from Scotland in Wellington on a census late last night! I'll see if I can find her again...

All of which doesn't help with exactly how your Millbrow is related to Edward.

And in 1841 Bell (Isabella) is on the same image as your Millbrow and lots of other Dabbses:

Also one of them on the previous image.

Also trying to follow up William Dabbs (Widower, aged 72), who is Lodging with Millbrow in 1871, but again, not much luck.

On that census, William's birthplace is Wellington, but on other censuses there is a William born Edinburgh, who looks to be the same person. So I imagine he must be a son of Edward and Bell, although I haven't found a baptism for him yet.

Thanks Kate.

All really interesting. There must be some link to the Millbraham in the generation before.

Wonder if there are non-con baptisms around anywhere.

Milbrough Dubbs buried in 1816, aged 85 (born c1731) must be the one married to William.

The Edward Dobbs / Bell Hendry marriage is on Scotland's People, so you could view the image to see if there is any more information, such as whether Edward was a widower. Though of course it might not say.

Bought the marriage on Scotland's People (annoying, as I had 4 credits, and it was 6, so had to buy some more) but it doesn't give any clues.
Actually, quite hard to read, but don't think it says anything about his condition.

Edit: does say he was a Corporal in the ?? ?? Militia

You probably already know this (with this being an old thread), but I found an interesting detail about the Dabbs family today, in the midst of trying to trace my Jones family of Street Lane

William and Milbraham baptised a son, Oliver, 23 Jul 1780, at Wellington, All Saints.

Andrew Dabbs (born c. 1767, Wellington, and who I haven’t been able to find a baptism for), baptised a son Oliver, 15 Jan 1804, at Wellington, All Saints, who died young. His daughter, Rosehannah, married John Jones who I believe may be related to my lot of Joneses.
